Humm.

I am not sure whether you have tried what i am going to mention. (almost the same effect from single image).

1. Create two layers of base.
2. select top most layer make opacity to 37%. (yes 37 %)
3. select the middle layer, apply gaussian blur with different strengths as pleases your eyes.
(on an image of 800 x 600 pixel, i would chose radius of 9 for gaussian blur, so try this first).
4. select top most layer, apply sharpening. (this sounds crazy , sharpening and blur on the image same time, but just watch).
5. flatten image.

This is basic algo, but could be used for lots of enhancements.

Note : i did not change the mod of blurred layer, it was set to normal all the time.

PS: hows you doing, sorry i did not reply the mail you sent about rejection of my photo.

Ursula I Abresch  Thank you, Arjun. Not sure I remember which e-mail you're referring to :)
Yes, I've tried your method, but the results are different than when done in camera, mainly because in camera things look slightly more imperfect, more natural, whereas done in post they tend to look too rigid.

Thanks again.

Ursula, I can truly appreciate the double exposure, the dreamy approach, the light and the - school book - composition. But I'm not sure about the overall feel. The light behind the tree for an example, distracts my mind. The lack of contrast as well. Not to mention the tension/story. But I might be off as I'm not a nature photographer. Sorry if I'm being blunt but I'm sure you can appreciate honest feedback.
U
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you for your candor, Ulf. It is good to know that I have progressed to being able to make school book compositions :)
Ulf Börjesson  Please tell med about your own feelings for this image. I'm seriously curious.
Ursula I Abresch  This was made on a rainy day, in a place by the Pend d'Oreille where I go to frequently, especially in the shoulder seasons (Spring/Fall), to sit and just enjoy the colours and smells and air of the place. Sometimes I look for bears at this place. To me this talks of what's important to me in life, peace, gentleness, kindness, solitude, quiet. It's an isolated, beautiful little tree on a hillside covered with grass wet with rain and a few leftover, dry wildflowers. A place, a picture, to let your mind rest and your heart just feel the quiet beauty all around you. That's what it means to me.

Note I placed this in "mood", not "landscape" or "nature".

Ulf, you see a lot of fault in this image: school book compo (no original thinking), distracting light, low feelings for you, lack of contrast, not to mention lack of story/tension. Really little redeeming value in your eyes. I, on the other hand, like it just fine the way it is, and am not intending to either change the compo, light, contrast, etc., or trash the image. But, what I wanted to say is that you and I know that not all images speak to all people. Not all images have to speak to all people. So if you don't like this one, that's fine. Don't worry about it. :)

Very nice. So, it's defocusing technique. Then, you merge the 2 photos in PS ? I like the effect and I'm really interested in how you did it ?
Ursula I Abresch  No. It is making two images in camera (that is, if you have a camera that allows you to do so). You set the camera to double (or more exposures if you wish), then make the two images and they're combined in camera into one file. You could also do it in PS, however, I prefer the more "natural" results you get doing it in camera. PS is a bit too controlled an environment for my taste, in general. Fernand calls it the defocusing technique. I started doing this well before coming to 1X and meeting Fernand, based on work by Freeman Patterson. I believe there are probably a number of names for this technique.
John Roshka   Thanks for the detailed explanation. Very interesting. I will take it into consideration.

Very beautiful work, Ursula, some time ago after seeing some of Fernand's images I could say that this technique became one of my favorites because of the dreamy images that could be done and this one is no exception! Wonderful done, really happy to see it published! Love it!
all the best
Codrin
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you, Codrin. I started using this technique well before I ever met Fernand, based on some of Freeman Patterson's writings and works. I'm glad you like it.
