F*** You (What's on her mind ?)
I didn't realized had captured this moment, until reviewed some photos I had capture that day on my PC.
Maybe she's only joking, but personally what's she doing, not permissible for me.
Why a little girl on her age doing act like that ?
Maybe she's only follower from TV action, I don't know.
I can't understand.
Shame for me...but that fact I found on the street.

If I understand her action as it should be ,and as any adult will understand it as it is ,The she is the most impolite young girl that I have ever saw in my whole life.
Now a little talk about what lies behind ,who to blame ? a lot ,
The family comes in the first place ,then all other secondary causes ,TV,faith ,school, friends, atmosphere, street behavior and so on ,what ever you mention ,it could be right ,but I blame first and last the education system ,starting with home ,and ending with school ,.
I guess at this age of extensive media and Internet communications, all the children at her age knows to do do the action, and great deal of them knows what it means ,but the great question is ,how many of them dare to the action to lady that deserve mercy and compassion ? I guess non,but some per sent of them dare to do the action to some other kids of their own ages as a kidding or they mean it.

Do not be ashamed Dian, you have done a good job that every one should be aware of ,to correct it for his own kids,.
Thank you for this .

Excellent , but ( unwanted action could not be considered as an ART !)
Gustavo Nascimento  why? I know this would be a question for the ages, but as long as it is shared every representation can be considered art, I believe ultimately we could argue that is a work of art without a specific artist, but in any of the cases the artist is only the mean of comunnication between the subject and the public, and the piece of art is not the subject itself but how it is represented. Or not? So, you don't consider documentary an art? I believe we can talk this on the forum though. Love the photograph nevertheless
Aziz Abbasi  Dear amigo ,Gustavo
I refer to your words " I didn't realize had captured this moment until .... " .
Reconfirming the beauty of the image , I believe ART is the result of DECIESION and ACTION of a HUMAN( the artist ). If a beauty happens by chance , it might be so beautiful but not an art.
I hope this does not make you disappointed . Sorry for my poverty in English.
Best regards
Aziz
Gustavo Nascimento  Dear Aziz, Thank you for your reply, I had understood your point, but so in this case, had Dian noticed the moment and clicked in the exact same second, being the output exactly the same, would it be considered art then? Or if everything was staged after? Then, for the same exact result, we have a work of art or a work of circumstances, but I believe the result is art as long as it is seen by someone.

I agree with your general definition of Art, and I understand your point, but I think luck can be added to the equation. Luck would be the decisive factor, indeed, but is luck an exclusive factor for defining art?
Aziz Abbasi  Muchas gratsias Gustavo.
Gustavo Nascimento  Dear Aziz, Actually I had been thinking and your view changed my mind. Nevertheless, it would be a question of wording, as we would call this a work of documentary, perhaps, and not art, but which is extremely beautiful and meaningful nevertheless. Thank you as well, and I'm not Spanish, but Portuguese :)
Aziz Abbasi  Thanks again Gustavo .
Dear Dian, Sorry for the discussion here. We both like this documentary photo very much.

Dian Agung Nugroho  In my humble opinion, the point is 'young children should not behave like her'.
She didn't respect to the others and it was really bad behavior.
FYI, there was exactly no other girls/boys, only 3 girls at that time.

Salam hangat,
Helmut
Dian Agung Nugroho  Mr. Helmut Schadt, apa kabar ?
Saya dulu mengagumi foto-foto Mr.Helmut di fotografer.net. Surprise for me, bisa bertemu Mr.Helmut di 1x.
Terimakasih komentarnya, I'm really appreciate. I still a fan of your pictures.
Best regards.
Helmut Schadt  Kabar baik. Terima kasih banyak.

Dian Agung Nugroho  Di Indonesia, kondisinya memang memprihatinkan.
Memalukan memang, sekaligus membuat saya 'shock'.
Saya sangat menghargainya.

I think it still a bad behavior from kids...:D
Anyway, thank you very much for your kind comment, Ulf.

Ulf Börjesson  Do you know why the kids behave like this?
Dian Agung Nugroho  Yes Ulf, I guess they only 'imitate' what they watch on TV, or what they seen around they live. In my country, there's only a few (very rarely) TV's program that suitable for children, and the bad is our government seem as 'close their eyes' for that. So sad.
btw Thanks for your attention, Ulf.

It is an excellent photo. I must agree with you Dian Agung Nugroho. In Asia, using your fingers and hands have a certain meaning. I learned that when I travelled in thes parts of the world.
Very sad if the young girl knows the meaning of the sign, hope she doesn´t
Regards Jørgen Mikkelsne, Denmark
Dian Agung Nugroho  Thanks a lot Jorgen, I'm very appreciate.
Specially in my country, and I had some experienced with 'fingering' like this ... mean very-very bad hurting someone else.
I'm sure she doesn't know the meaning of the sign.
She was only did as she had watched on TV, or follow what she had seen on her neighbor...etc.
Best regards.
metalchloe 3 years ago
Perhaps many of you are looking a little too deeply into this image.

My first interpretation was this girl has no idea the implication of holding up her middle finger, and was doing so because she has seen it on television and knows it's provocative. Period.

I have photos of my own just like this one of kids in various countries flipping the bird at me, an obvious westerner, while joking and laughing. Likewise with adult friends in non-English speaking countries. They are instances which capture the (fascinating) cultural differences in our world.
Dian Agung Nugroho  Interesting.

Maybe you're correct.
Maybe we're all too seriously respond to this image.
Maybe fingering like this, could mean vary in different country.
But in my culture, what she had done (fingering), is a very bad thing.

Thank you very much.
nevrgonastopme00 3 years ago
Please do not be so quick to assume this is a bad thing. In Asian cultures they use their middle finger for pointing because it is the longest. And I know for a fact that "got your nose" hand gesture in Korea is a big "f**k you!" I do not quite know the meaning behind this, but I am 90% sure it is not the same vulgarity we are all accustomed to.
Dian Agung Nugroho  Thank you very much for the share about the culture on your country.

I live in Asia too...precisely, Bandung - Indonesia.
In my place, in my city...fingering like this is very-very bad, very provocative thing.
Try to fingering like this to someone in the street, and I'm sure you'll get beat or slap from them.

Anyway..thank you very much.

hemogoblin 3 years ago
Actually I agree what you are seeing is the girl flipping off the camera, her friend turning her and the photographer tried to catch her looking at them and didn't quite make it. Easy to jump to the negative, but that arm and body aren't aimed at the begger. Look at the stones, that hand was aimed square at the camera. Besides, don't assume a vulgar gesture in the US means jack elsewhere. If she was making an O.K. sign, Spaniards would be losing their minds. I'd want to see the shot right before or right after this one.
Dian Agung Nugroho  Thank you very much for your comment, I'm very appreciate.

Fingering like this in city where I live, is very provocative thing...very-very bad thing.

Are you sure the finger is directed at the beggar? Seems more as though it's oriented towards the camera.
Dian Agung Nugroho  She's fingering at me or at the beggar, it doesn't matter for me. It just not something wright for me. Thanks.
Erica Asahan  I was just going to say, looks like the girl was flipping whoever was taking the picture. Her hand was positioned a little too high to flip someone that low on the ground. If for some reason I am wrong, this really breaks my heart.
Dian Agung Nugroho  She's fingering at me or at the beggar, it doesn't matter for me.
The only thing I can not accept is she doing something 'bad' for her age.

I'm very appreciate for your comment.

Well, we have a lot of beggers in my city as well, who could but don't work because human pitty is more powerful than their willing to work and they make money out of it. I hate them too, but my inner ego, or whatever is there, doesn't allow to behave like this (showing fingers or insulting). That's the reality anyway.

Great shot. You must have spent hours hiding to get it.. :)

Whatever motivation behind the girl's action is not permissible for me.

But, I don't want to hide terrible fact about young children in my town.

I'm glad for your appreciation.

Thanks a lot.
Lachlan Kent 3 years ago
Makes me angry and frustrated... publishing this photo is a very good thing, especially by including how this photo makes you feel.
Dian Agung Nugroho  Frankly, there is contradiction when I'm going to publish this photo.
First, it would be shame on me, it show how 'bad environment' in my city; lack of ethics education, bad TV program, lack of parental attention, bad social intercourse among young generation, etc.
But, that the fact I captured, and I must tell to everyone, specially in my city. There's something wrong people. We must always give enough attention and affection to our children, and we must always give them good example to them.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment Kent, I'm very appreciate.

true street photography you capture what you see & the rest they say is history. perhaps judgment is not called for just the compelling desire to ram the finger somewhere it might get stuck & hurt. children mimic their peers & their parents just maybe it is her received wisdom. what i know it is a fine example of what street shooting is about surprised though you were not aware you had taken it but it looses nothing for this. bravo.
