Golden colors! Beautiful!

Wow, the difference between the original and the edited versions is remarkable.
Do I understand well that you created this picture from one JPG? No multi-exposure HDR?
As other people stated, the sky is somewhat unrealistic. The rest is stunning and worth a long look. Congratulations!
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you very much Gerald.
It is indeed a HDR. I have used three exposures. But it is possible to generate a HDR effect with only one exposure, but it has to be in RAW and the result is not as good as multi-exposures.
Cheers

in comparison to the original one, i think it would better if you use the sky of the original pic

Auch wenn es ein älteres Bild ist...
Ich finde bei diesem Bild den Himmel schöner- er wirkt dramatisch und bei dem Originalen Bild finde ich die Gebäude schöner.

This is the most beautiful photograph/painting i have ever seen. I don't care how you captured it -- that is part of what makes it art.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Oh! Thank you very much Tracy :-)

To much edit ? No. You are the creator of the image, you are presenting it to us the way you see it fit, just it is not photography anymore, is cybergraphics.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  But I think its photography. No graphics have been used ;-)
Timor Tom  I said cybergraphy, photography is something you create with light only (even if this is digital), not with algorithmes. Your oryginal photogram is interesting enough (OK maybe sky is not sufficiently dramatic, it was calm evening after all) and what you did from it make me ask one question: did you see your landscape (it is of sort) in the way you are presenting it to us before you squeeze triger, or your arrival at this point is a pure luck. I see much intent in you other works, so I wonder.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Well I've made many experiments with HDR last year, but I don't do that anymore, I'm just out of it. Many people don't like it because they think it's only the software which makes everything. In some ways it's true but in some ways no. You have to know what you shoot and how many exposures you make.I knew this view would be intresting from my past experiments but I wasn't sure with the result. As I saw the result I was suprised. Also I was lucky:)

I've made thousands pictures from venice, but only 2-3 came good through!

Reading through all the comments I was just wondering what makes this HDR/ edited picture special; which it clearly is to me. What I take away from this is that it's the big expanse of greyness of the water against the colours that balances it; (grey not being an often seen thing in HDR). 'Too much edit?' No; but what is going on with that sky? ;-) I love the image even better with the sky cropped out almost completely then the grey river comes into it own even more. Venice is somewhat super real too in terms of subject matter; so a super real image fits ! ;-)
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you very much frances and sorry for my late reply. I haven't noticed it!

i will try a cropp with the sky, or maybe I will change it completely ;-)

I like the original, and I like this one too. It is definitely overedited by photo standards, but the editing effects (tonemapping) makes it a completely new image. It works!
Just wondered why you picked this image. The original don't really need any hdr work (if you at all did that). Or is it only adjusted and tonemapped?
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you very much Lars,
well, i just wanted to create an unnormal image through editing and HDR was my only choice. I've used Photomatix for adjusting and TM and further edits with PS with the Viveza plug-ins.

i like the original one better. this hdr looks a little bit over-edit but still a good work.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you Ronan for dropping in....

Petra says this has a high "wow" factor and I agree. However, I like the original image (see link provided by Kaveh below) very much and, because of that, I am somewhat surprised that you took the time and made the effort to carry the HDR processing to this extreme.

I like this photo, myself. My main criticism is that the reflections in the water are unnaturally bright relative to the sky that is being reflected--but so much of this image is unnatural.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you very much Your Excellency King Douglas,
I think the answer of your question about my effort to an extreme processing is simple: I just like it :)
And yeap, the sky is not well done. I don't like it either.

Thank you again,
Kaveh
King Douglas  Don't forget...I said I *like* this image. The rest was just discussion.

As i start with HDR pictures almost all looking like this one because at this time i do not know how to use the software. Anyway, like all things we do see or experience the first time we are very curious about it. Some of the technique in picture editing at the first time we are wondering and later it comes up this is art. I am agree this one is overedited but im not sure on purpose or by chance. Equal to me in a way because all the comment and discussion shows one thing for me: Nothing is impossible and its all about personal taste. Art is is in every way different. Maybe we have to adapt. I would like to see it in full size to get a meaning for it.

Greetings Robert

Robert  I just visit your hompage. Not the FC! Now i understand! Your work cannot valued from only this image! My respect!

like the technique or not you have to admit this is very well done. excellent image Kaveh
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  ah, thank you very much john after 9 months!!! oversighted your comment :-(

As a painting effect it looks great and it is a good job. I would like to see the original, and edited in a more subtil way just to compare, it looks a well composed picture, taken at night or almost at dark night. Nice perspective with the canal. Great job!

Regards
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Many thanks Nuno,
you can see the original here without any edits:

Such a remarkable effort. This image really pulls you on and makes you LOOK at it! Could not ask for more. Terrific!
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thank you very much dear Scott :)

Kaveh, I'll have to admit I agreed with all of these people disliking your image for the obvious amount of post image processing, but I have to say, the more I look at it, the more engrossed I become, I would never hesitate about buying this as a gallery print, bravo Kaveh, great shot, and (picture perfect editing), even if some of us dont think so :P. If you're ever giving HDR lessons, I'd love to come learn :P.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  You made me very happy Mike,
You showed you have been patient and that's all what i want. To halt for a moment.

Hehe, you can buy it of course if you want, but be carefull i'm not cheap ;-)
You should fly over tousends oceans and seas. over mountains and valleys, rivers and forrests to catch me :))
It's not very hard to make such images, but i takes lots of time. HDR is not suitable for every kind of motive!
Mal Smart 4 years ago
all depends on the subject and how it is applied! I like this very much but if you were to apply this same level of editing to another shot I might not. The skill that the artist must have is knowing when enough is enough. mal
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  My dear frind Mal... My humble thanks!

Is it a more extreme edit than to make a color scene into a B&W? Or are we only more accustomed to the latter? If B&W were a new technology would we all be arguing about the "unnaturalness" of it?

Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Nice strong words Ernie. thank you so much for expressing your solidarity ;-)
Scott Crouse 4 years ago
I like it Kaveh. I've worked with HDR for about 2 years now and it always gets the same mixed reactions. I have found you either take it to the extreme, or only a very light treatment. The fact that you have taken this to the extreme and now looks like a painting works for me. Great job.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  That's the speciality of HDR. Most of photographers don't like it with the reason: It's not a photo. And that is actually trure. But it is a picture. and we are picture makers. we want to show something different to see different ;-)

Thank you very much for commenting.
Too much edit for my taste. One example of an over-used HDR effect.

Same feelings as Laurence Garçon... poor Venise!!! I hope you enjoy yourself... ;);)
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  haha haha..poor venice. I liked it. cool :))
But hehe i think i'v saved venice! All what i'v seen there were tourists and tourists and tourists again. I have not seen any images like this from venice and because of that i wanted to do something different. Venice is poor, when bilions of people are walking and talking through it's narrow alleys.
Thank you very much flo anyway, don't be worry about venice ;-)

Yes, sorry, IMO too much edit... so surprised that it has been published on OE. That's probably an august particularity ;-))) But... if some like it, if you like it... What can I say ? Enjoy it ;-)
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  I was suprised too after the image was only one minute in screening!
But as you see not every body hate it ;-)
Thanks for dropping in Laurence
Laurence Garçon  Kaveh... I would be very happy if the head screener who chose to publish it "in one minute" could justify his choice on this page... It would be very interesting for all of us. Head screener... if you hear me ;-)))
Petra Oldeman  Thank you for your input Laurence. The choice to publish the image was mine! Had you taken the time to read the thread of this image you will have noted that Kaveh and I have already had this conversation!
Furthermore, as you will observe there are many who like this image and have commented such.
If you have a problem with a screening decision, I suggest that you take it up with the screening crew directly.
Cheers Petra
Laurence Garçon  Dear Petra... Be sure... I have read the thread !!
But how could I know that you were the one who decide to publish this photograph ? And, I am sorry, but your "conversation" do not explain your choice, but just that it was your taste, thing that I respect anyway. Cheers...

Kaveh, for my taste, the HDR is over processed and you are distracting the viewer from the mood of Venise.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  many kind of tastes ;-)
thank you very much for telling your idea honestly...
Lars Klottrup 4 years ago
As a painting i would like it. As a photo, it is over-edited IMO :-)
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  yeap, the question is: is that a painting or is that a photo? i can't paint, but i can edit to creat a painting-touch and that was my intention.
Thank you very much for commenting Lars.

The 'right' amount of edit is the amount it takes to get the effect you want :)
I think it's a great image.
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thanks a lot!!! I appreciate it Ernie.

Terrific HDR. This is awesome. What painterly colors!!!!
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  thank you very much Judy.
Right! painting was my target ;-)

"Too much edit? "
I guess it is to much for some...it is all matter of personal taste i think. Great job Kaveh!
Petra
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  Thanks Petra,
Yes, because one of my similar pictures was rejected very fast with this comment:
"The HDR effect is too strong, it doesn't look good."

here is the pic

http://www.onexposure.net/queue/r60297-fullsize.jpg
Petra Oldeman  I think there always will be discussions about the amount of editing on a picture. i have to say that for me personally this published photo has a bigger wow factor then the other one you are refering to. But that is just my personal opinion...nothing more..
Think you are very good in creating a certain mood in your pictures.
Petra
Kaveh H. Steppenwolf  thank you for your nice words. now i'm happy and can go to my bed with an empty stomach :)
Good night
Kaveh
