A poem in an image
Ursula I Abresch  :) Thank you!
I admire your fasination with wildflowers. You do them justice.
My nickname my husband gave me before we were married was and is
Lavender-Butterfly-Fairy-Flower-Button.
This image reminds me of that.
Ursula I Abresch  That is a very beautiful nickname, Angela. I'm glad you like the picture. I don't have many pictures of when I was a baby, but I have one my mother gave me, when I was just under 1 year old and had just learned to walk, and there I standing with my nose stuck inside a daisy, smelling it. I used to spend hours "repairing" daisies as a kid, by sticking little sticks in their hollow stems when I found them broken, so they would stand up again. I guess it's genetic or something :)

The colors and especially the way sharp details emerge from the soft haze in unexpected places make this one very special flower shot!

Wow... this is so good. Very dream like!! Maybe you need to start giving classes on how to do flowers? I don't have the discipline for Macro but this one is just so inspiring. Excellent!!!
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you, Eddie. Classes, eh? Hmmmmm. I think I'm probably the world's worst teacher when it comes to photography :)

Love it.
The purple border really adds something.
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you. Yeah, it's hard to separate images from the black background sometimes, and I like using colour :)

Very powerful and yet subtle at the same time. Wonderful shot!
You know, from time to time I try a couple of shots similar to this one, but they're not quite there. They lack that special something, that your shots have.
All the best
Michael
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you, Michael. It often is a combination of circumstances, and with wildflowers you have a very small window of opportunity (whoever says flower pictures are easy is very, very wrong!). Keep at it, for me, what's fun is all the time I get to spend wandering around outdoors looking for them.
Michael Jakesz  Thanks for your reply, Ursula! It's funny you see that the same way... for me photography is the best excuse to go strolling/wandering/hiking outdoors :-)

That's a wonderful macro Ursula! It's interesting your choice of selective focus; probably I would have chosen a petal on the right, but your choice is very original and I like it a lot!
Andrea
Ursula I Abresch  I tried various areas of focus, in particular I thought that focusing on the front petal that are really blurry in this image might work (and it still might), but I ended up liking this one better because it makes the image glow to have focus a bit further back and to the sides, sort of like a frame holding up a glow. Thank you for your comment!
Andrea Orioli  The more I see your photo and the more I'm convinced that you made the best choice :-) I like to search the focus point and then come back to the "big yellow", it's a kind of composition that attracts me very much!
Ursula, I was wondering how you got so much light out of the flower keeping the black background...Did you use a torch to lighten the flower while you were in a very dark room? Or is it a matter of post-processing?
Andrea
Ursula I Abresch  BTW, I would NEVER pick wildflowers and bring them indoors to shoot them! They stay where they are, where they belong :)
Andrea Orioli  Wow, thanks for the very helpful explanation!! and..mmm..saved for the bell, I was ready to call the forests branch of WWF :-))
Ursula I Abresch  Good, I'm safe. I hear internet access is not too good in jail :)
Ursula I Abresch  Thank you, Andrea.

No, I don't use any artificial light, except sometimes a small gold reflector or a piece of white or goldish tack-board over the lens (hole cut out for the lens). But I didn't have anything along this time. It's more the time of day, and how the light works on certain days. Sometimes colours just glow in the evening (yesterday was like that, today will not be like that). On a very wide aperture (maximum or close, for me usuallly F2.8 or F4), if you meter for the foreground and underexpose some, and shoot into the light but at a slight angle, you get very bright foreground and almost black backgrounds. Also, the landscape helps, these flowers grow on a hillside where the background is mainly the faraway hills on the other side of the river. I then emphasize the effect further in post-processing by darkening the edges and brightening areas I want to keep bright.

Hope this helps!

Ursula, you have a certain way of catching the beauty and fragility of flowers. It is very inspiring!
