In Santa Monica, I took a series of motion blur photos of the ferris wheel on the pier before they tore it down and replaced it with a new one. I was trying to practice motion blur. It's so difficult to get a shot this good. Well done!
Mal Smart  thank you Mae, this wheel has just been taken down in my home city to, I miss it! I wish that I had taken some more shots of it. All the best. mal

great work ! is it by multi-exposure?
Mal Smart  Hi John and thank you.

No trial and error really, I worked out how to start/time the exposure about 10-15 secs before the wheel started (it stops about every 90 secs to let people on/off), so that gave the impression of the static carriages, while the rest of the exposure recorded the blurr as it set off. All the best. mal

Great photo, just the right timing for this one.
Congrats its really awesome!!!
Mal Smart  thank you very much Jan, there was a lot of trial and a lot more error in the making of this one, about 20-25 attempts to get it right! lol mal
Very beautifull.
I have to admit, that I sat for a long time, wondering how you got both the freeze and blur.

I actually read all of your comments, just to see if , you'd explain it.

All the best - Patrick.
Mal Smart  Many many thanks Patrick, I wish that it were my great technique and knowledge that got the shot but unfortunately it was trial and error, I would like to re-visit this idea to get the exposure absolutely perfect. All the best. mal

The movement blurr adds such a sense of drama and impact to a well documented and familiar structure! Wonderful work Mal! Dom
Mal Smart  many thanks Dom, its a wheel near my home and I have photographed it many times, but to capture an image with a difference is difficult, very glad that you approve of this one. mal
Dominic  I didsn't realise you were here in the UK! Studying this wheel it looks almost identical to the Manchester one.
Mal Smart  You are right Dominic, this is the wheel in York, it is made by the same company as the Manchester one, I've passed the manchester one a few times but never stopped for a closer look. mal
Dominic  Yes, I guessed so - the lights around each car give it away! Thanks Mal!
Strong and original capture

pfew that's white. Like it though. from the thumb I thought it looked like a 'negative'
Mal Smart  lol - that's the polite way of saying its too bright Koen. You are right, I'd like to have another attempt at this. mal
Koen Pieters  no no Mal. It's really good as it is. Some things just need to be very white/bright. This is one of them. Sorry if my earlier comment was misleading.
Mal Smart  lol - no offence was taken Koen at all, just bring your sun glasses next time you visit! lol cheers Koen. mal
Stunning Mal. I actually tired a similar shot this weekend at a fair. But, it turned out like--------. Happy to see what I was trying to get. :) Beautiful.
Mal Smart  I took a lot to get this one Angela! lol. I'd like to re-visit the idea again to see if I can improve a few elements of the shot. Cheers Angela. mal

Amazing shot and truly impressive curve!
Also thanks for the view behind the curtain you posted above.
All the best
Michael
Mal Smart  many thanks Michael. there was a lot of trial and a lot more error in this one, gigabites of error! lol. roger.
Michael Jakesz  Sorry to hear about your wasted gigabytes, Roger! Also I thought this was Mal's picture, didn't realize it was yours. Maybe an error in the OE system, is it? Btw. this Mal guy.... alter ego or hacked account? ;)))

P.S. I don't know what's more fun, enjoying your shots or reading/writing in your shots' comments *g*
Mal Smart  Hey Jason, get the hell out of here, before I call you something boring, like John again! All the best. Rog

I really like how this curves through the frame!
Mal Smart  thank you Martin. Funny that you mention the curve, I wasted a lot of time finding this composition, I had to wait for someone to move their car, so I could get the tripod where I needed to be. mal
Martin Gremm  Well worth the effort!
Mal Smart  cheers Martin. mal

Very nice work Mal, glad this one made it, I was concerned the bright white would turn people off. Thanks for the explanation on the shot, love reading what people went though to make it happen. Congrats again!
Mal Smart  yes, you are right Scott. Quite a number of people commented about the light and indeed, I was a bit worried about that to. I have a couple of other frames where the whites are not so hot but the carriages were too dark, lol! Great point Scott, glad that you made it. mal

Mal Smart  Thank you very much Jan. It took me many attempts and there were a lot of rubbish shots to Jan. mal
Ralf Stelander 4 years ago
Very cool, how do you get it to both freeze and move in the same picture? Did it stop and then start? I guess it doesn't have to do with flashes, you would need a mighty one, to light this baby up...
Mal Smart  I have to confess that it took me 20-30 attempts to get this one Ralf. I took quite a number with the wheel in motion but they just look like spinning tops and very uninteresting.

its a 30 second exposure and I worked out how to time the wheel when it came to a stop to let passengers on and off. When it stopped, I actuated the shutter giving the sharper carriages which was about 25 secs then as the wheel started to move again, this gave the blur about 5 secs. cheers Ralf. mal
Mark Kitaoka  Ah, I just read this after I left you my comment. Really clever and now I am CONVINCED that your girlfriend or boyfriend took the shot! Very clever Mal, very clever!
Mal Smart  lol!
Ralf Stelander  Thanks for letting me know, clever idea and a stunning result!
