Glad to rediscover this image. I remember seeing it about a year ago and couldn't quite shake it from my mind as I attempted to emulate it. Very inspirational work.

Ah, an old SAAB isn't it? I used to drive one of those myself, the most boring car I have ever owned but it gave me verry litle problems. Well, not much of a comment on the image but, annyway..
King Douglas  Yes, a SAAB, but it was new when I photographed it.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

this is incredible!
King Douglas  Thanks, Doug. So you are from Billings?...Montana? Isn't that about 50 miles south of Roundup?
Doug Roane  Yes, that's right King - familiar with the area?
King Douglas  Of course I was teasing about Billings being south of Roundup (as the appropriate expression should be Roundup is north of Billings). My sister used to live in Roundup. I've paid several visits to Billings, Roundup and the surrounding territory beginning in the early 50's. My most recent visit was 1996, I think. Big Sky Country, indeed. Have you traveled to every corner of the state? Is Montana your birth state?

Cheers,

MAD skills, indeed.... ;)
King Douglas  Thanks, Emily. I submitted a photo of my kids earlier today and thought of you as I did so, although it's nothing like your work. It's in screening and I have *no* idea if it will be published.
Emily Bem  Well, I'm sure it won't be anything like my work....it will be like yours! :)))) I really hope to see it out here! :)
King Douglas  I think the screeners have created a temporary (I hope) rule against publishing any more of my photos. I have six, I think, that have been in screening for about 24 hours. I know that's not unusual, but I think at least one of those might have gone straight to the published page if the screeners weren't getting tired of seeing my name.

We'll see. If the photo of my kids doesn't get published, I may post it to Critique just for grins. It is quite different from most of the work I've had published so far and may not meet all of the OE Art Marks.
Thanks for writing. I'm honored that you should do so.

King, This is so cool. I'm also so impressed by your level of skill. Just perfect. I've never been able to pan before. It always turns out like ----!
:)
King Douglas  I used to fence...you know, foil, sabre, epee. I was pretty good. I got the chance to fence a member of the USA Olympic fencing team--just practice. It was like fencing a ghost, except that the ghost's foil was constantly poking a spot just over my heart.

Advertising photography is like fencing...very competitive. Technical skill was something I had to have in common with my friends, colleagues and competitors, otherwise, I couldn't have stayed in business.

But when it comes to artistry (bundling a lot of superlatives into that one word), then I can barely hold my own here on OE...and your work is a prime example of that level of competition.

Panning is difficult to do smoothly, but it helped that I happened to own a very expensive motion picture fluid pan head. I could set the resistance so a slow pan of a constant speed could be maintained.

Thanks,
King

Wow! This is great.Nice speed lines.
King Douglas  Thanks, Leif.

Amazing! I have rarely seen photos which emphasize the notion of speed so well!
King Douglas  Then it worked! Thanks, Alexandre.
lucian olteanu 4 years ago
strong one!...like a......vodka!?
King Douglas  Nice comparison, lucian. My vodka photo was recently rejected, though. I thought it looked pretty good. "Didn't tell the OE story" the screeners told me. Are you all teetotalers? :>)
Thanks.

I don't think you can take a bad photograph. WOW
King Douglas  Judy...you are speaking to the King of snapshots. I love everyday, goofy photos and take plenty (including plenty of bad ones--I once put together a slide show of photos taken accidentally with my elbow while my camera was slung over my shoulder..back in the days when you could do that). I also can do the technically challenging stuff, but I rarely do that for fun.
Thanks.

Who knew that a Saab can go this fast? Very cool shot!
King Douglas  Thanks, Martin. It's much easier when the SAAB is sitting still...and in the photography studio at that.

Is it a SAAB? Spectacular photo anyway, I'm also impressed you did this without any photoshop!
King Douglas  You don't like SAABs? :>)
Thans, Ralf.
Ralf Stelander  There are two Swedish car-brands Volvo and Saab, I'm more of a Volvo guy... =) But I've never seen a Saab look this good before! =)

a Saab 900 - my car - very good :-)
King Douglas  Thanks, Mark. The car belonged to an associate's wife, who was very mad at him when she found out that her car was taken to the studio and photographed without her permission.
