Mal, you're l33t with this kind of moody pictures! I'm still jealous because you rox dude! :D
Mal Smart  I mentioned to some others that I may do this type of subject too often but It makes me happy! lol Cheers Sam, its great to have you around again. mal

Mal, stunning shot.

Apart from being a lovely and competent landscape, it has quite a surreal feel to it. The combo of soft land and sea and the mysterious concrete bunker (?) is great.

Excellent work.

Mal Smart  cheers Jeremy. It was all a bit of an experiment with new filters and camera, I took more poor images than good ones that day. Its a disused jetty that was abandoned in the 50's, the structure is quite dangerous now. all the best. mal

great shot
Mal Smart  many thanks Jure. It was a new camera and filters that I was trying out that day - very glad that you approve. mal

very special artistic photograph.. I love texture of walls..And see -clouds seem look like near the same.. and I love the feeling that the gate in clouds make in myself..magnifique
Mal Smart  I'm really pleased that you mentioned the gate and clouds Flo, I waited for ages waiting for the clouds to for some interesting shapes above the gate and tried to compose the image that way, thank you for seeing this. all the best. mal
Martin Gremm 4 years ago
Your usual high quality work, Mal. It almost looks like the rubble in the foreground has been ground off the seawall by the feathery ocean.
Mal Smart  your right Martin, sea wall is indeed crumbling. The place fell into disuse in the 50's and bits are falling off it now at a quick rate. cheers. mal

Looks a little soft is that banding i can see in the highlights?
Mal Smart  I had a ha hard time deciding on the sharpening of this, I think that your right, perhaps a little more required but I don't see any banding? mal
Andrew Thatcher  Im pulling your leg :) I Think its ok as it is. :)
Mal Smart  you had me crawling all over the processed file looking for it! lol. But now that you have mentioned it, there might be a tiny bit on the front of the rock. mal
Andrew Thatcher  :) sorry mate.
Mal Smart  lol - but you very accurately identified the two areas of the shot that I was concerned about, you have a great eye! mal

Superb Mal, congrats. !!
Mal Smart  thank you Dare, testing some new kit that day, quite pleased with it. mal
Again a strong composition and great B/W tone rendering
Mal Smart  many thanks Jef. I was actually using a new 10 stop filter that day instead of the ir one that I usually use, which of course gave me a colour image, I nearly posted it in colour but decided not to. Very glad you like it Jef. mal

Great compostion, dramatic image. I read the other comments. Can't say enough good things about this...but where the heck is it? What the heck is it? 10 stop neutral density filter? In front of or behind the lens?
Mal Smart  many thanks King. Its a tiny disused harbour called Skinningrove on the north east coast of England just north of Whitby, it fell into disuse in the early 50's, the jetty is quite dangerous now and is surrendering itself to the sea.

You are spot on King, its a BW 10 stop filter in front of the lens, It was the first time that I had used it. I normally use a Hoya R72 infra red filter and then convert the red image to b/w in processing, which is 18 stops but I thought that I would have a change.

Codrin
Mal Smart  many thanks Codrin, please tell me when I get too predictable with stuff like this! mal
Codrin Lupei  Sorry but don't wait to hear this from me, because it's something that I'll never have enough, beautiful images like this, and about 'predictability' (lol, don't know if exist this word?) I believe that it's not always bad.

So, I have to ask, is this taken with the NEW camera Master Malster? It is a wonderful image and the tonal range is just delicious.
Mal Smart  new camera, new lens, new filter - same old crap photographer though! Not sure how to improve the last weak link!.... cheers Tracy. mal
Michael Jakesz  If I may? "Not sure how to improve the last weak link!" -> Humour usually helps , and you've got this quality by the bucket ;))
Mal Smart  I'm dieing to call you something other than Michael but I have not got the courage to do it after my last stupid reply! lol

many thanks Michael, life is too short to be serious for long! all the best. mal
Michael Jakesz  I guess then we'll call it even, and move on to the next joke ;)
(P.S. thanks for being a good sport about this)

Ilja Hackman 4 years ago
Well.. this one is just fantastic once again, pal! :)
This really looks like gate in the clouds.. Fabulous mood! and your BW work is just marvellous! :) Cool stuff, pal!
Mal Smart  cheers my friend, yes the relationship of the gate and cloud interested me and influenced the compo. many thanks. mal
Ilja Hackman  plus.. long exposure makes the waves look "cloudy" as well so it seems like a wall and a gate in the clouds..
Maybe Saint Peter´s on a lunch break as I can´t see him in the picture :) LoL!
Mal Smart  there have been some financial cut backs in heaven, St Peter had to take a new job as a bouncer at the door of a local bar here in York!.....;))) mal
Ilja Hackman  LMAO!!
=)
Mal Smart  He expects big tips also, or you never leave!.... pal
Ilja Hackman  So, in other words; he got promoted from gates of heaven to the gates of paradise?
LoL!
:)
Mal Smart  lol - just goes to show that being good all your life, may not be the best route!...;))
Very beautiful.
Mal Smart  cheers Angela, I was hoping for dark moody weather that day but did not get it! lol. mal
Emily Bem 4 years ago
The tonal range is really something! You do marvelous, surreal landscapes Mal......they really speek to me. There is always something meticulous about them while still keeping such an artistic feel.

:)
Mal Smart  Cheers Em, I was pleased how this turned out, new camera, lens and filters. The weather was bright and beautiful - no good for dark moody shots, so I just tried to record what I saw. lol. mal
Willy Marthinussen 4 years ago
lovely shot again Mal..a peaceful scene with very good bw tones..love it:)
Mal Smart  many thanks Willy, it was an experiment with a new 10 stop filter, just getting used to it at the moment. mal
