Kickoff!
This was my idea for a poster to get Oklahoma residents interested in ballet (i.e., anything but football). It's a combination of electronic flash and a floodlight in a single exposure using a view camera.

your work blows me away! this is incredible - I can't even begin to work out how you did this...
King Douglas  After everything is set up, it's just a matter of timing. Here's how to do this:
1) Set up the electronic flash lighting to look good with the toeshoe against the ball.
2) Set up a spotlight behind the leg so it covers the area where you want the blur to be, but casts little or no light on the ball (otherwise, the ball will be overexposed by the spotlight while the leg is in motion).
3) Use theatrical filters to match the color of the floodlight to the color of the electronic flash (I used a color meter for this, plus experience. This is stiall a little yellw, but better that than too blue, in this case, IMHO).
4) Set the camera shutter on "B" so the flash will fire the moment the shutter is opened and the shutter will remain open as long as you desire.
5) Practice your timing: Start with the dancer's foot against the ball; count 1-2-3. On 3, you release the shutter, the flash fires, and the dancer moves her leg slowly and smoothly away from the ball (it's much easier to do it that way--in reverse).
6) Shoot a few Polaroids so you, your model and your assistant are clear about what you are trying to accomplish and how you are doing so far.
7) Load color transparency film in the camera and keep shooting until you think you have what you want to see when the film comes back from the lab. Don't forget to bracket your exposures.

Thanks for your comment!

Brilliant... Hope the campaign has a great impact (the image certainly does).
King Douglas  Steve Axford asked the same question, to which I replied: "To use a medical metaphor, the operation was a success, but the patient died."

By the way, this was shot about 25 years ago, but scanned just this morning. :>)

Thanks!

Good grief....this is SWEET! :)
King Douglas  Emily,
I'm a bit surprised that you like this--I should think you'd find this too mechanical/technical. I'm not particularly attached to this myself, but I thought it was funny and it extends my contribution of non-Photoshop, in-camera special effects. I suppose it's technically competent as well, but the idea is the main thing.

Thanks very for the compliment.

Did they actually use this one in Oklahoma?
Michael
King Douglas  Michael,
This was published as a poster for Ballet Oklahoma. I had a reputation as a dance photographer when Ballet Oklahoma came to me to ask if I could create a poster for them that tied ballet into football. Really. They said that.

Thanks,
King

King Douglas  Fulvio,
But Daria and I were just talking about how original and elegant your work is. I guess we are the "Original and Elegant Gang"...I kinda like the sound of that. Beats "Hole in the Wall Gang" all to pieces.

Thanks for the kind words,

K
Fulvio Pellegrini  I kinda like the sound of that, too

King Douglas  Ralf,
My father taught me that since he couldn't afford to send me to college, I might as well learn how to be clever (and self-sufficient).

Thank you.
