I have just joined 1x and was looking through some works. This happens to be my very first comment. You have picked a perfect spot for your model and the effect is facinating to watch. I have seen many similar photos but the addition of the model and her placement makes this one perfect. very good thinking..
Mal Smart  Murat, thank you very much for your kind words. My model was very upset that it took me so long to get the shot! lol

thank you.

an awesome picture..
Mal Smart  thank you Mehmet, all the best. mal
I love this! It seems so simple, yet so evocative. The wanna-be writer in me is reeling with ideas.

And what a clever technique! I may have to try that someday.
Mal Smart  Please do try it Lindsay, its fun but takes a little practice. Thank you. mal

i love this feeling of disappearing into the very fabric of existence.
you melt into the mood of the environment.

good title. the viewer cannot tell if the character is in agony or ecstasy.
Mal Smart  lol, you have again interpreted the image very well, disappearing and fading away was the intention of the shot.

My model that day "Tracy" was in agony not ecstasy, it took me about 40 mins to get this one how I wanted it as I applied Vaseline to the filter and kept adjusting the quantities, she was not impressed that it took so long, she was very cold! lol.

cheers. mal

Wonderful work with the editing...gives it a mysterious feel.
Mal Smart  cheers Kellie, much appreciated. There wasn't much editing done other than boost the contrast levels, the raw file was a little flat. The major effect here was the vaseline on the filter to get the blur. mal

You should definitely have a look at the "Her Ghost in the Fog" videoclip, by Cradle of Filth.. Same frightening feelings, the same coldness sticking into the very deeps of my bones.. Great work, Mal.
Mal Smart  I was not familiar with that song or video! I have just checked it out on Youtube. The mood in the video was exactly the vulnerable lost in hell thought behind this image. Thank you for that amazing take on the picture, it is exactly as I wanted. All the best. mal

Van den Houte Jef 4 years ago
A great image. Mysterious and visually very strong
Mal Smart  cheers Jef. It was one of the few occassions that I actualy got something very close to what I was attempting! lol. mal
Mal, very creepy, I believe Warner Bros could use this for one of their horror movies posters... or for the alien descent ones as well. Wonderful shot, brilliant. Can I ask you how did you made it? And where is the voting button? I cannot vote for this one. Is it only me?
Mal Smart  many thanks Serban. recently I have been trying some of the old school tricks with scratched, warped, blasted filters etc but also using thin coatings of vaseline on a warm up filter infront of the lens. To be honest this image took me nearly 30 attempts to get something like the effect that I wanted by constantly applying/removing vaseline from the filter, it is really hit and miss technique but fun to try, you never know exactly what the result will be. mal
Serban Mestecaneanu  than the goodies and congrats even much deserve to go to you for putting so much work on this idea

Tracy Martin 4 years ago
Oh Yeah. Damn creative as usual Mal. What sets this apart from some of the other similar tree images of late is the human element, to me that adds so much more substance rather than it JUST being beautiful.
Mal Smart  cheers Tracy. My model was not happy as it took me nearly 30 shots to get the vaseline smeared correctly, she complained quite a lot actually!.. lol. mal
Andrea Orioli 4 years ago
Stunned as usual by your picture..As a beginner I didn't know the use of vaseline on a filter (still wondering how you cleaned it..:-) ). I'm happy to see your pictures here because I have always something to learn from you!
Andrea
Mal Smart  lol - the boring answer to the cleaning issue Andrea is that I don't clean the filter to which the vaseline is on! I just pop it back in the box and leave it messy for the next time I want it. many thanks. all the best. mal
