How to write Tutorials

The next 1x photo book is going to be a how to book with descriptions about how the photos are made and a little info about the photographer to get to know the each other better. The idea is to make a combination between a top quality photo coffee table book and an inspiration/learning book telling how to make such amazing photos. It will be 200 pages with about 100 pictures and one page of text about each picture. I think it's very exciting to find out how pictures are made and we shouldn't keep our wizard's tricks to ourselves, because when we tell others our secrets it forces us to develop, pushes our personal growth and makes us take the next step in photography! Imagine a book with 100 fantastic photos which can you look through in any order and find out more about how a certain photo you happen to be interested in is made!

If you want to have the chance of being published in this book, please go ahead and write a guide about how one or more of your photos are made and post it in the "Photo tutorials" forum. Unlike previous books you don't have to buy this book in order to be published in it, we will just select the most inspiring and educational guides for the book! If you are not that familiar with English, please write it in your own language and ask someone you know to translate it. An 1x-editor will make sure that all the guides are top quality before printed in the book.

If you need help writing the tutorial please contact one of the book editors, KPK, John Parminter, Chris Dixon, Jef Van den Houte, Gerard Sexton or Alex O'Brien. If you are not familiar with English, please write it in your own language and we will find an interpreter for you!

The tutorial should be at least 500 words long without EXIF information and biography.

EXIF: Camera? Lens? Focal length? ISO? Shutter speed? Aperture? RAW/JPG/film?

(1) CONTEXT
How did you get the idea to take this picture? In what context was the photo made? (setup or just on impulse, where, when, intended audience) How did you set up/plan the picture? (props, studio setup, waiting for a certain moment to happen, it just happened)

(2) THE PICTURE
Is this one shot, a bracketed series, or a composite of more than one shot? What equipment did you use? (camera, lens, tripod, film, gels, flash, studio equipment, props) What settings did you use for your camera? (shutter speed, aperture, focal length, ISO, white balance, any other special settings) Settings for other equipment if used (flash, lights, preferably a diagram if you have an advanced flash set-up)

Why did you choose this certain composition, crop and point of view?
How did you handle the light and why did you choose this certain kind of light? (Flashes/natural light/backlighting/placement of model in relation to the sun, weather conditions etc)
What steps did you take to make the picture stronger?

(3) PROCESSING
What equipment did you use for post-processing (computer, software, plugins, and so on) How did you do the post-processing? If possible, described step by step, so readers can recreate it. Please include info about cropping, adjustments, layers, colors, masks, cloning, b/w conversion, sharpening, anything else. The more exact values, the better.

(4) OUTCOME
What did you want to say with the picture? (any special feeling/mood/story you want to convey) Did you do something in particular to make the message stronger, either in setting up the shot or in processing it? How did you think your viewers would react to the picture? Once the image was public, was the viewer reaction what you expected?

(5) 3 HINTS
Give three general hints or the three most important things to think about in succeeding making a picture specifically like this.

(6) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Add your own additional comments about your photo. Add specific information about taking a photo like this. Add any biographical/contact information you'd like to include (write a short presentation about yourself, job besides photography?) Why do you take photographs?

(7) DRAWING OF SET-UP (OPTIONAL)
Please make a drawing of the set up since it's sometimes hard to describe in words and this has a very high pedagogic value for your readers. How did you set up any flashes? Where was the sun? Reflectors? Where is your camera and where are the subjects?

(8) ORIGINAL IMAGE FILE (OPTIONAL)
Please include the original shot straight from camera so we can see how you thought about cropping and post-processing.

By the way, even if you don't want to be included in the book don't hesitate to write a guide about how your photos are made, it can be very useful to someone else, just use the questions above! Teaching is the best way of learning!

DO NOT INCLUDE THE QUESTIONS IN THE TUTORIAL!  MAKE SURE YOUR TUTORIAL IS AT LEAST 500 WORDS LONG WITHOUT EXIF INFO AND BIOGRAPHY. (ONE STANDARD TEXT PAGE).

Cheers, Ralf

It's intended for photos published on 1x like the previous books.

It can be a photo already published in a previous book, but it's probably more interesting with a new photo. If you have some time please make a guide of "1 cm Nemo" I would be very curious to find out how you made it!

I think this is an excellent idea Ralf, I enjoy reading how others make their images and I am always willing to offer my knowledge.

Great idea, Ralf; do you think 100 pages/ authors would be enough for such a site like 1x?

It will be about 200 pages, 100 pages of photos + 100 pages of text, it's hard to fit more than that into a book. Each photo should have a whole page since this is not a pure learning book but also a beautiful photo book so the presentation is important. If the concept proves to be popular we can make more books like this of course! Also we might make it in pdf-format which means it's not the same page limit.

Thanks for showing interest in this Matjaz, with enough contrubutors I think this will be a fantastically beautiful photobook and also very useful for learning and getting new inspiration!

Excellent, thanks a lot, a great picture for this purpose too I know that many people wonder how those are made! This is a great fit for the book, we will contact you later with some follow up questions.

Best, Ralf

No, it doesn't matter when the photos are taken or published on 1x if that is what you mean.

There might be some photos from the 2010 book in this book, but we will mainly focus on finding new photos for this book which are both interesting to look at and interesting from a learning perspective.

Wow, this will certainly populate the Photo tutorials section more than ever before!! I will do "Emma & Chris" this weekend, I shot that in a pretty unique way...

Stay tuned!

Thanks Ralf, I do like to write about 1 cm Nemo, but not much to write about it ;-), it's almost as It is, but the preparation is long lol, but Don't worry i will if my time permits.

I will look on my other photo which one will be suitable ;-)

Good Luck and more Power to 1X ;-)

Yeah, actually it could be a better idea to write a guide on one of your other shots since it's already in the 2010 book. The preparation is certainly a very important and interesting part of taking a picture!

Thanks Ralf, I understand the goal, that's a nice project for 1X and for the authors.
I will try to participate.
cheers.

Ah, haha. This is not a so good idea for lazy people like me and those who haven't made a tutorial before.
Ralf, how much time do we have?

The sooner the better of course, but the final deadline for the book is quite far ahead. Would be very cool if you wanted to participate!

I think this is a fantastic idea for people like me who are new to photography. It's one thing to admire somebodys work, but to be guided through how the image was taken, will allow people like me to learn through replication. Maybe if this proves a success, you could then produce a series of books, based on subject, macro, landscape, portraits etc.

Interesting, will look forward to do one.

Wonderful, wish you luck and success.

This could even take 1x much higher.

I think that this is an excellent idea for not professional people as me that him much would like to learn, I would be charmed with taking part and though I have very few possibilities of having a photo published in the book due to the high level that exists in 1x I want to try it of all forms.

My problem is the language and I do not know anybody who could translate the text, I would like to know if with an Internet translator like that this one translating these words might serve?

Thank you and a greeting

I think this photo for example is really awesome: http://1x.com/v2/#photos/latest-additions/30021/

Please write a tutorial in your own language (Spanish?) and I will find someone who can translate it for you!

Ralph - Does there have to be an exact blow-by-blow tutorial or can general editing guidelines with exif camera settings suffice... possibly with some comments about a shot? Damned if I can remember what I did, to the number but my general approach is easy to recall and might be more valuable than exact details.

Heya,

Sure, please go ahead and write down what you remember and we will go from there!

Brilliant idea set into motion!

Though i have an observation to point out. With this kind of a concept, IMHO its very important to have the original capture and the end result with all the modifications made. That way, the start and end points are established...the path followed can be what the artist explains...or the user can work more creative options to arrive at the same result...or come up with something completely new!

Just my thoughts :)

Best Regards.

No, it will be white to the general public but members can choose either white or black. (And, a little secret, they're going to make me a special gray one!! Shhhh, don't tell anybody else, it's a secret!!)

What do you mean? Will there be a special b/w switch in the book only accessible by members. That would be wonderful!

On another note, I'll try to come up with something before the deadline.

Grey is a bit dull after all, I think I will go with the yellow and pink stripes that someone suggested!

That is a very good idea! I'm not sure I can fit it though with only about one page of text per image.

Congratulations on the idea... it sounds great!

I only see 7 of my 9 published images in the drop-down from the "Write a Tutorial Page".

Using FireFox 4.01, OS X 10.6.7

Posted 1 year ago
I did notice that it's my oldest 2 images that do not show up on the drop-down list. I'd like to do a tutorial on one of them.

Is there a limit on how far you can go back to do a tutorial?

Is there any way to include images in the tutorial? Maybe thumbnails that link to images in my home page gallery to show the processing steps?

Thanks,

I have high on my list "Fix the damn WYSIWYG editor for forums". That includes fixing so that images can be added.

Yes, please send the picture of the set up to ralf[at]1x.com and we will include it in your tutorial and maybe in the book if there's enough room.

How can the original photo and the others taken during the same session be included in the tutorial? Where should I upload there and how can I link them to the tutorial? Sorry for these questions, I am of another generation and these things are difficult for me ...

Paolo,

I am one of the team helping Ralf with this.  Upload your original in the "Tutorial" and send the rest to me at chris_dixon@btinternet.com and I will make sure they get to Ralf before he starts his selection process.

Cheers Chris

But Chris, how does that get them included in the Tutorials section of 1x on the photographers' Tutorials???
I have 3 or 4 pics sitting in my uploaded section that are on my "Emma & Chis" tutorial. I used my upload slots to get them there in the beginning.
