Meeting in Copenhagen + visit of Gursky exhibition

Hi all,

Those of you who read my "Gursky again" thread may remember that I suggested a meeting in Copenhagen.

Meanwhyle I could check some dates so that I would like to offer two suggestions for a meeting in Copenhagen: 24th/25th March 2012 or 14th/15th April 2012.

If anyone of you is interested in a meeting, please answer in this thread. In the case of enough members interested, I'll try to find out some more info about places of interest in Copenhagen. Maybe someone who lives in Copenhagen or nearby can give helpful hints.

Of course a visit of the Gursky exhibition is listed on the agenda:
http://www.louisiana.dk/uk/Menu/Exhibitions/Andreas+Gursky/Andreas+Gursky

I'm looking forward to reading your relies.

Preferrably 14./15.4., plane tickets seem slightly cheaper and hopefully it should be warmer already. Wolfgang

Interesting! Will have to try showing up this time. Both options should work for me

The same goes for me.

I'll have to check. I'll get back during the weekend. And the second weekend seems to be the weekend after Easter, so I would not be surprised if tickets and hotels were less expensive as not so many people would be travelling.

Hi,
I already booked April14th (arrive 13th, return 15th) - would be great to meet anybody, but please do not feel obliged... Just got a cheap plane ticket and could not resist. Plan to stay at the Bella Sky Comwell Hotel Copenhagen, they do a reservation (no prepayment) for 85 Euro per night single occupancy.
Hope to meet anybody there. Wolfgang

Booked! Gursky April 14th. It would be great to meet some 1x members there and then, and maybe go for dinner, pub or something in the evening =)

Also booked Copenhagen for 14th / 15th April.

So we are at least three who confirmed their visit:

Wolfgang, Björn, and myself.

Frédéric, Lars, did you also decide to come?

Anybody else interested?
Ralf, Jacob, you both are not far away from Copenhagen. Should be an easy task for you to join :-)

Come on, Ladies and Gentlemen, make an effort!

Do you really want to miss Gursky and the fine modern architecture in Copenhagen ... and the nice 1X members ... :-)

I'll have to look at this tonight. You all booked at the same hotel? Would be convenient if we were at least not in opposite ends of the city

No I don't think we are staying at the same hotel. But that shouldn't be a problem, we'll just have to decide when to meet at Louisiana on Saturday and afterwards we could perhaps go back to town together and grab something to eat or drink. Just an idea =)

Sounds intriguing but even though I live in Copenhagen I'm in Berlin that weekend. Actually I will probably return to Cph on one of those two dates (14-15/april). But I don't know that yet.

I even have not one but TWO pictures of this hotel in my humble gallery of published photos:-)

But if you need some insight about Copenhagen (like which bars you can still smoke in) I will be glad to help if I can.

I'll look at it later. Checked a little, but seems to be a bad day to book at reasonable prices

I see the room rate increased for that period - single in Bella Sky is now around 110 per night on booking.com

Lets see how we can define some kind of agenda. Saturday we need to find some transportation to the museum and back, Sat evening is probably great for the harbour, leaves Friday evening after 8pm or Sat morning for Bella Sky shots...

Hi there,
I am in. I am arriving on friday 17:25 and will be leaving on sunday 21:00. I'll have a look at hotels tomorrow. Probably close to the railway station. Where are you staying? Wolfgang in Bella Sky. How about the others?
BTW, the exhibition is a 40 mins train ride from Central station and then a 800 m walk.
Best regards and looking forward,
Frédéric

That would be excellent. But we might have to split into two groups if we will be more than four persons. By the way, I'm staying at a hotel near the train station (I'm at work now and don't remember the name).

Hi all,

I'll try to prepare a (limited) architectural tour for Saturday (after Gursky) that we can do together with the car I'd rent (if there is interest to join).

Very helpful for finding architecture locations is this guidebook http://www.dac-bookshop.dk/Shop.aspx?ID=48&ProductID=B6077@@SHOP1 (received it meanwhile) as well as looking at this site: http://www.cphx.dk/index.php?language=uk#/34282/

Sounds good.
I have talked to a friend of mine that has visited the Louisiana Museum last year or so, and he says that it is a very nice museum, where you should allow enough time.
So, we'll have enough to do ;-)

Sounds really good. Start at Bella Sky would be more than perfect for me (and I guess thats a first architectural site, considering Dan has already 2 pictures published), afterwards I am ready to join any plans. Regarding the car we can split costs or I'll take the dinner, whatever fits the bill. Looking forward to a great weekend, Wolfgang

Hei Wolfgang and Peter,
Good to know. I am trying to make some plans (meeting friends etc), so then it is good to know what kind of plans you have. I was f.i. planning to have dinner on Friday with a friend and I might visit another friend on Sunday.
Peter, you're arriving on Saturday morning... What time?
Best regards,

When I remember correctly it's 7:55. Then I have to look for the luggage, search for the rent car and then drive to Wolfgang to make some shots inside and outside the Bella Sky hotel.

I live in Copenhagen but I'm in Sweden in that weekend. I have heard good things about the exhibition and hope you will enjoy it. About the architectural photography in Copenhagen is not just Bella Sky but the whole area around it good place for that. At least when architectural photography means modern, minimalistic, lot of glass and diagonals, buildings with strange formations etc. (and doesn't it almost always do that?). Many of these types of subjects in Ørestaden and you could also look for it at the harbour front at Islands Brygge. I'm not really into architectural shooting myself but have often thought that I should do a tour out there. Hope you will have a good time in Copenhagen!

I agree. I would also recommend a walk down Christians Brygge/Kalvebod Brygge where you can find the Royal Library, Krystallen (office building) and the head quarter of SEB (Skandinavian bank).

Returned a bit late last night so that first shots can be presented at the earliest later in the evening or tomorrow.

The meeting was great fun and Gursky was ... an experience. In any case a lot of stuff to discuss :-)
Louisiana museum itself is a fine lacation, too.

On Sunday I could use nearly the whole day - a little dulled by some rain in between - for visting architectural locations from my very long list. The hired car and my navigation device were really helpful here.

So all in all it was a very fine weekend together with very nice people.

Peter

Yes, Louisiana was great, and the Gursky exhibition was very extreme: images that were very good and others that were not really so great. Rhein II was in the second category, IMO. In additions, I found the print quality not so good: over-saturated. The reproductions in the catalogue were much better.
On Sunday, Liesbeth and myself rented bikes and criss-crossed the city: Christiana, Opera House, Little Mermaid, Nyhavn, Glyptotek, ... Nature was already much further in Copenhagen compared to Bergen. We've had a great time, taken into account that I was a little feverish and had some flu-symptoms.
I am staying home today, as I still have some fever. I'll take it slowly, but might scan through the images and look for some photos from the gathering. It was very nice meeting everybody! Open for a next one.

Frédéric Verhelst (Papafrezzo) wrote

... thats why Rhein III actually received top dollar :-) He improved saturation and overall impression after submitting Rhein II to critique.

I completely agree with Frederic: there are some pictures which I cannot understand at all and which look (whatever format) really trivial. But others simply work - FI pit stop, Tour de France I, "Hamm Bergwerk" (the miner's picture) and actually also many others. There is some fascination in having multi-meter formats high quality prints... especially when resolution is outstanding (which was not the case in all prints).

Louisiana also exhibited some Cindy Sherman prints - another top-dollar photographers nowadays.

Anyway, worth a visit. I really enjoyed it. Wolfgang

I'm going up there on a visit in a week or two, so it's nice to know a little about what to expect. Too bad about the presentation of  "Rhein II", but I can't help  wondering how much a bit of extra space would add to a picture like that:-)

One thing that comes to mind: people of the Gursky status can afford to produce whatever strange pictures, at least some of them, to please themselves only and not to care about the rest of the viewers. His more mainstream work is more than enough to maintain his status. And "strange" work at some point starts to work for him, not against him. That's the stuff bewildered viewers talk about, not so much about good pictures...

I just returned from the Gursky exhibition and I did discover the problem.....furthermore I think the reflections from the windows were extremely distracing in some cases.
An interesting collection of pictures though. I had a feeling that some of his pictures had no perspective. They seemed almost isometric which made it difficult to feel the "grandeur" of the scenarios.
