Airport xray and film
Posted 2 years ago
Hi everybody,
sunday I am going to portugal for few days and decide already to bring with me only a nikon F4 and some films so no digital. Do you think the xray at the airport could create any damage to the films? and if anybody know the city of porto is there anything that is a must see? I am not talking too much about tourist things but something more deep and intim. Could be something like the fisherman coming back with the first light or a bar where a certain type of music is played or...

No problem in Portugal, Tito. We have most recent scanners in airports with very low level of power. Also if is films is in 35mm, the metal cartridge protects very well it.

But when you arrive to Portugal the customs officers don´t pass your film in scanners, only when you depart they will scann your bags.

Don´t worry. Enjoy Portugal and take good photos ;-)

There are about 32 Port wine companies based there who each give guided tours of their facilities and each give you a free glass of port to try. . . . You could photograph the experience. . . You may have trouble focusing however ;-)
X-ray is bad news for film as far as I have read. . . even Mr Salgado has changed to digital because of it. Rui will tell you.

Jon

update, he just did. . . ;-)

Yes, but Mr. Salgado uses medium format 120 roll film, and that film don´t have metalic cartridge around, like the 35mm ones.
Other problem is Mr. Salgado likes to trip to third world airports, where x-ray scanners is more old than my grandmother and have huge power :)))

By the way, someone see the result of the work of Mr. Salgado with digital cameras ???

So, I am almost ready to go, crazy to think that now I am sitting on my sofa and in two hours and a half I will be 3000 km away. Anyway thanks JBA for suggesting the visit to the Port companies, moreover I am a sommelier and that was already in my plans, I think is going to be very interesting. Rui I watch the meteo and maybe monday afternoon and tuesday is going to be a bit better but even if it rain I am not to going to be disappointed as I like the atmosphere rain make, everybody is very quiet and that is not bad for photography.

Good morning, Tito. Yesterday Portugal looks like hell. 150Km/h winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain. Today are cloudy and with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

But for next days, for Lisbon area, no rain at all. I wish you luck ! :-)

I know this thread is old now but just in case someone else who shoots film is going to Porto my advice is not to use the photography store immediately north west of the central market to get film processed. Never in my life have I seen such badly scratched and dusty negatives returned to me. It caused me hours with the clone tool after scanning. That said, Porto is a fantastic city for street and architectural photography, and the portions of food in restaurants are huge!
