Nikon or Tokina
Posted 2 years ago
Hiya,

Im torn between the Nikon 12-24mm or Tokina 11-16mm... The Nikon would be a mint used one whilst Tokina would be new so price doesnt really come into for me, has anyone used both in direct comparison.

Thanks in advance

I've heard good things about the Tokina Vinny and no doubt the Nikon is decent as well, if all things optically similar then you would maybe come down to focal range, I have the Sigma 10-20mm which I use at the 10 to 14mm frequently but have to change lens when at the 20mm range for my 17-70mm. I often find that I work quite a lot at the 17 to 25mm range, so I would probably be persuaded for the Nikon as it may prove slightly more versatile.

I know that the Tokina will not fit on a full frame if you think investment. Maybe this factor will way in the balance ? I personally have it and absolutely love it !

I personally chose the Tokina 11-16 mm because of the inability to mount filters on the Nikon 12-24mm

I think you mean the 14-24, which has not filter threads... the 12-24 has - so you can use filters/

I have had both - there are pros and cons.

The Tokina has f. 2.8, and that is fine and better than the Nikon = f. 4.0, but often you shoot stopped down if you use it for scapes ?

Both are fine lenses, very fine - I shifted from Nikon 12-24 to Tokina 11-16, but after a while I missed the extra range to 24 mm, you can nearly call the Tokina a prime.

Not many, but there have been some posts about AF-issues from the Tokina - this is almost non existing with the Nikon.

Should I go back to DX I would buy the Nikon 12-24 because of the better range, it really gives it better opportunities. You can use the Nikon on DX for portraits at 24 mm (36 mm), and the Nikon is a gem on 24mm - here it shines.

I think the Tokina is sharper if we only talk about the widest end (11/12-16, but Nikon is top at 24mm and at least as sharp here as the Tokina at the widest end)
