Genuine Fractals.. Scaring!
Posted 2 years ago
I installed Genuine Fractals 6 a few days ago, and used it straight away on a large format print project with excellent result.
Then today I decided to run a little test of it.
I downloaded one of my images from here, 900 pixels wide, in photoshop/gf I just set up the dpi from 72 to 300, and entered. The result scares me. I'm sure I would be able to make a decent size print from it!
Impressing program!

But I have some issues with it. Any others here using it on a windows 7 64 bit system? (Using CS3)
It works fine in express mode, but in full mode it reports a fault on "in string" and does nothing. I've searched the forums at onOne, but can't find anything about it.
Just trying here before I contact them.

I'm not sure I follow you. Just changing the ppi from 72 to 300 does nothing to the image itself, it just makes the existing pixels printed tighter, a smaller print. I guess you did something else as well or is it something I misunderstood.

Indeed Mal,
it's a good plug-in:-)
I blow-up some images from a A4 till a 90 X 60 cm on canvas for an exhibition and they were excellent...
maybe a "pixel peeper" with magnifying glass wouldn't agree.

I work with a Mac and it works on both modes. (cs3)
I did a test with a 16 bit image A4, with several layers and it worked :-)

Maybe, re-install the plug-in could solve the problem.

If keeping the size and increasing the amount of pixels you are resizing.

I think even a pixel peeper will be impressed by the difference from resizing in ps. It can of course not compete withe the full sized original, but still impressing. And used in that printing project it seemed to make a big difference.
Reinstalling might solve the problem with the full mode. But I think I just e-mail the onOne guys, after all I paid a decent sum for it..
The download page called it 64bit and win7 compatible, but somewhere else on the site I found it marked as "under testing" for win7 64 bit.
I do want all the extras in full mode, and I paid for those

Just download a demo of it. I think you can run it on a 30 days trial. I don't know if it will mark the print demo, but you can at least check it on screen. I'm out of the house for 2 weeks now, so I don't get any chance to explore it more for a while

probably not to the quality I want, but I have the original files so.. I will give it a try when I come home again.

Ok! I'm really not techinally savvy- How does the plug-in work? I downloaded the free trial and now what- I know, I know, I know everyone can laugh now- BUT please help. :)

Angela, in PS go to File --> Automate and there are three options for using Genuine Fractals.

BTW, Alien Skin Blow Up is another powerful plugin, but not as good as Genuine.

Guys - just a question. Isn't this a bad thing - ie stealing of others' pics. Not you guys - but in general

I've been thinking about this but I have a problem. Did I understand it correctly that you can only use it as a plug-in to PS?

My post-processing is really limited and therefore I'm a happy Gimp user and not really interested in buying PS. Does anybody know any stand-alone replacement for Genuine Fractals?

Hi Johan,
If there's no plug-ins for Gimp, you could blow-up the image by many little steps (5% each time)
I don't know if you can create an "Action" in Gimp for this, it would more practical.

Thanks Ben! That's what I usually do, no problem. I just remember some tests I've read some time ago which give the impression that results achieved by GF are impressive.
Cheers

I agree, this scares me too! This makes it even more easy for people to download our files from the internet, blow them up and sell them :-(

Been out traveling, so have had no chance to follow up.

That is 64 bit version? Then I'll try to re-install. But have to wait two weeks to get back home.
You get all functions to work? Mine worked fine in the "simple mode", whatever they called it.. But with the full menu with all the adjustments it looked good until I clicked "apply".
I didn't really have a lot of time to play with it. There was meters of prints that had to be ready before I left home, so the fix might be simple.

Of course, bad if used with the wrong intentions, good if you have a printer like mine and use it legally.
