Hunter or Fisherman?
Posted 2 years ago
I was asked an interesting question the other day. In my approach to photography am I a
Hunter?
I look for a certain scenario with the right light, people or inspiration and then I shoot...
Or am I a Fisherman?
I choose a location, mood or concept then wait for something to happen in the frame or in my mind?

What are you? :)

I'm a gatherer: I walk around until I find something good to shoot.

I'm a nurser. I nurse my wife untill she gets so well, that I can get some free time to hunt the light, to embrace it! :-)

Sounds like a hunter to me, but one who goes above and beyond the call of duty. :)

Can you hunt light? Isn't it just... there?

I'm hunting a special appearance of light, that I can embrace! :-)

What am i?....erm.....well..... i guess i'm a "patient" :-)
Patience is my essential ingredient, without it i would not do wildlife photography.

A hunter & a fisherman both are the same in my book. I know where the animals feed & the fish swim!

I'm a hunter without gun, a fisherman without rod :-)

i'm a fisherman, too lazy to walk! :)

I am nothing at this moment, I walk through my city streets and find nothing at all...:(

everything is grey and pessimistic and the same wherever I may roam...

anybody has a cure for that? :)

More of a hunter. But then trees can't exactly get away can they? . . .

I try to be an architect when I take photographs... but I usually end up being a butcher...

Understanding things is just hype Dinu. There are two types of people, those who pretend to know, and those who want to know. We are all equally confused. And thanks for reminding me I started this thread and for allowing me to show what category I belong to. :)

The man who decides who eats the fish and the pig? :)

Yes, blurry abstraction, minimalism, good light and digital grain go together rather nicely. :)

Insurance not covering your stolen equipment Thomas?

Although this deviates from the hunter fisherman, perhaps in search of a feeling when photographing. Calm? I get that impression when looking at your photos.

It's just the way of catching them that differs.

That sums up my strategy! That might explain my success ratio...

Yes, you most certain can! Light (and variations thereof) is precisely what the camera records - we are sadly not recording physical objects in a small magic box!

Some years ago, at the advent of digital photography, I heard a similar question being asked. However, instead of relating to "hunter" and "fisherman" it was about "sniper" and "machine-gunner".

These days, I see many snap-shooters chasing around firing off hundreds of shots in but a few hours in the hope that they will get "that" shot or at least one that they can PP manipulate into something that looks beyond the ordinary. As someone who grew up with film (and a limited budget) I am definitely in the sniper / fisherman category - although I do lapse, occasionally, into a sort of machine-gunner / hunter mode when I'm on holiday / travelling and time is precious. I find this frustrating, though, as I like to have time to think about what I'm doing.

Even though my shooting is exclusively 35mm format these days, I carry a tripod deliberately to slow me down. If I'm really trying to take what I'm doing seriously, I'll carry my light meter and double-check the camera's meter reading.

I like that! It makes sense.

Whatever M. Hulot was, that's me! A wistful, "scatter-brained angel" (Bazin), hovering near the ceiling hoping for my visitation to pay off before I come crashing exhausted to the floor!

There are lots of machine gunners around..
For me, it depends on what I shoot. I can plan something and take 2 or 3 shots. Or if I'm out shooting bad weather I'm machine gunning. You never know if that wave will look a little better, or go a little higher. And then there is the rhytm of the other waves.
So I guess I can qualify as any of the types mentioned, depending on situation.
But, to come home with 3 shots to choose from makes life a lot easier than coming home with 300..
