One Imgae Price?
Posted 2 years ago
Happy New Year everyone.
I have a pricing query......a client of mine (non photographic related) would like to purchase one of my images for xmas cards next year...I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how much to charge.
Can you give me a little input on this please?
Thank you so much.

If he's a client that you value, you might want to give it to him with a release only for his cards. Might be worth more in the long run than a couple of hundred now??

Does your client want to buy pre-made greeting cards from you? Or just the photo so they can make or arrange to have the cards made themselves?

I make packages of assorted greetings cards for distribution, and normally charge $20 for a pack of 12. If you are just going to sell the digital image to your client, decide what kind of limitations you want (expiring license after 1 year, image size and resolution, etc.). Somewhere around $100 might be reasonable for a digital copy to a client. Digital copies are best done through 3rd parties to ensure license duration, etc. so factor that in.

I don't use my photography for a living, mostly for the fun of it on the side, maybe other folks will suggest higher prices.

I'd sell them a license to use the photo, depending on the amount they print. www.fotoquote.com is a good software engine to generate quotes on licensing usage. Generally it depends on how they use it, where and what for but if you can get your costs covered (they pay for press production) then that leaves you with all of the profit left over. Sans shipping of course, though try to get that in there too.

Ultimately it depends on what you value at...name the price, people will pay if they want it badly enough.

If you're selling the cards yourself you may want to consider going on a large website and getting a run of 100 printed at a discounted rate. Markup by 400% and then re-sell. I think even MPIX has something that will make cards/envelopes.

Happy new year Edd,
Just my experience, it will sound sad but this is it: I´ve been selling postcards for publishers for about 15 years and the question is that the price is really low. If your client thinks about to sell or use the image in a sole country, let´s say Hungary, and only during one edition because normally xmas cards are one year use only, will be normal and standard to ask for 60 to 90 euros. Another example, for postcards they payed me 35 euros only per unit but that was because they wanted docens per year and we are taking about 10 years ago. This year the municipal administration of my small village is using one of my images as xmas card, with a very small distribution and non commercial, the price, 60. just examples, I hope it helps, others they will give you another prices.

I will follow the post to see how it ends,
Sergio

Thanks so much for the input on this, as the client wants to print them off himself next year(he is an offshore tax attorney) and there will only be one printing(ppl never want to send the same card twice) I'll just go for the one off flat fee of 90 euros. That sounds about right to me.
Again, thank you all for the input on this...helped me see more clearly.

Be sure to pay the tax on your earnings, although I'm sure he'll tell you how to avoid doing so .......... for about 90 euros ;^)
