Photo project - Human evidence
Posted 2 years ago
Hi all,in my quest to become half as accomplished as most of the photographers on 1x I have taken up a evening class which so far I am greatly enjoying. The latest project I have is 'Human evidence'. My initial thoughts were environment and the destruction man has caused. Now though I'm thinking or a documentary set of photo's of one persons day. This would take the form of something like an empty bed, half finished bowl of cereal, toothpaste on a toothbrush, empty office,a glass of whiskey, cigarette butt etc.
Having written that down it sounds cliched and not at all exciting. I'd love to know what you think?

Can you please elaborate little more ? I am not quite sure to understand. Do you want some further ideas for your project ?

Hi thanks for the reply. Any ideas would be very welcome.
I'd also like to know what you think of my original idea. A day in the life following someone around without actually ever seeing that particular person, just evidence of where they have been.

I think any idea is good as long as it is well and smartly executed... Always easier to have good concept than executing it well.

So your idea is good indeed. What I see challenging here is to avoid doing a serie that looks more like a collection of still life rather than something that convey a recurring idea. So if your main idea is "waste" stick to it and make sure every shot gives enough hint on it and does not merely show something that is remotely related to it. Because otherwise it will fail whatever the quality of the shot you come up with. Also because it is a serie think about the sequence of photog to have highlights at the right place.

Jacques thank you for your thoughts. I agree that I am in danger of creating a series of unconnected still life photos,so a theme such as waste will need to stand out. Thanks for your thoughts.

Sounds good.

Perhaps try including some elements of the 'person' (person is actually a legal term that means a 'legal fiction' or 'corporation' so I don't like using it in relation to a man or a woman) like a hand, foot, arm for example, but then with the last image add a twist. I always remember the shocking video by the band Prodigy called 'Smack My Bitch Up' (lovely title). If you haven't seen it check it out on Youtube. I can't say I enjoyed any element of the video, but I've never forgotten it.

Look forwards to seeing the end result.

Regards
Bob

Your project seems nice, but it has been already made lots of times. So try to approach by another way the subject.
Good luck !

you may be able to tie in your two themes if you had an out of focus trash can tastefully inserted into every photo (most likely the background). It would help to unify the photos and if you got good at "hiding" the trash can it would be a fun thing for your audience to look for. It sounds childish on paper, but i feel that it would be a neat thing to try. I hope I have communicated my idea clearly enough that you can at least see its essence. (I have been known to explain things poorly)

When expressing your thoughts and your views over a particular material or a situation, or intention is quite hard. Too many the expression can take place very simply and can express so much more in so less.

But we are after all human beings and thus we are different in most aspects of our life individually. So naturally we tend to interpret all those things around us in our different ways. But there are those things that we interpret universally all over the world. the way we feel when we see a baby's enchanted smile, or a flower bloom or a butterfly flap its wings around the garden.

Sorry for blabbering on, but the point is trying to express what you feel and make others feel the same thing around you can be a little bit hard on the head, but i never said its impossible.

Wish you all the best Pete and hope your work would be both a pleasure and delight to watch.
Hoping to see your work.
