Dear Santa, I have been a good boy this year...

Santa will be here shortly, and I need to know which glass will be a better choice. I have a 18-55 IS and a 50 1.8 and I am thinking about asking for a 70-300 IS USM or a Tokina 12-24. I know we could only ask for a glass due to the crisis... :)) so pls. help me to decide.

The objective is get published at least one time :))

Thanks in advance..

Miguel, is bether you ask for a complete L set of lenses and 2 bodys of 1Ds MKIII, works bether with Santa. If you ask only a 70-300 or a 12-24 Santa gives you only a filter or two.

I already write a leter to Santa asking for a Leica S2 :))))

Now let me think. Easy............................................... Sigma 10-20mm.

Sorry Miguel ;-))), it all depends what you want to concentrate on shooting, I use my 10-20 and 17-70 far more than my 70-200 because I like wide open images and to cram everything into a frame.
If however you may tend towards more nature images or long distance portraiture then the choice would be towards the 70-300 perhaps.

BTW, a choice of lens will not favour you to get published, I think you know and maybe your aim in your photography should not be concentrated on getting published. Be dedicated in an area of photography you really enjoy and are enthusiastic about and you will develope, your images will improve and you may along the way start getting a few published would be my advice.

Hi Miguel,

John is right... You hesitate for 2 lenses that are for very different purposes. So, ask yourself what is your priority, the kind of image you want to do and you'll get the answer for the lens.

Also I find that your current gear allow you to do a lot. Do you really have purpose that are out of range already covered by your lenses ? (except for occasionnal shot). As far as I am concerned I do most of my pics with my Sigma 20-40 f2.8 (a unusual lens that I learnt to appreciate)

John,

I wish I know what kind of photography I like the most, or at least what kind of photography I tend to do less bad :)

I am absolutely agree with you about being published. I need to concentrate in being a better photographer... find my way and progress in this... then probably I will get published. You are very right, I only tried to make a joke, but you know jokes have always a great part of truth... :))

Thanks so much.

Miguel, I knew you were joking and my answer was lighthearted as well but maybe a little truth in there as well.

You will know what lens you will want and will make the right decision I reckon.

Thanks Jacques, I would like to have a replacement for the kit lens and I think 12-24 could be a good lens for this. But also I think a tele could help me a lot in street photo and nature... My problem is I think is better to get a Tele first because I do not have this focal, but as you say I will not use so much as is not a lens to be used very often.

Any case, I will think about your sigma 2.8 sounds good... Thanks again.

Thanks John,

I am not really sure about my decision, any case I will try to do my best with any of those... but I think I have to review all your photos(and learn) if I decide to go wide... :))

I did not mean to promote my Sigma. I like it but it is unusual and some other lenses might be better out there. A tele is good for nature and portrait but not for street. Your 50 is much more relevant. Ideally for street you would want something like a 17-35 (or better 17-55).

I recently bought a 55-250 IS Canon and it's great.. and I think Santa can afford it!! You can shoot close up things architecture from a distance. My latest published image is shot with it!
I also have the 10-20 Sigma, and it's really really great!

Thanks. So I think I have to go for tele as I have this wide-medium focals covered.

Thanks Patricia, I will go for 70-300 IS, is an EF and who knows if i will go for full format soon. :)) I have to think carefully about the next lens 12-24, 10-20. 16-40?? :) Expensive and difficult the path of the amateur photographer is
