What ruined your day today?

My dog 'Fudge' fell in the canal when we were miles from home.......

....and I didn't have a camera.

There's not a more pitiful sight on the planet than a freezing cold saturated whippet.

When my baby was about 6 months old he came running towards me and jumped right into a pond/water feature thing in my complex - thinking it was a solid surface. He was shocked that it was not - it was water - and then the dec freeze of the water set in. He stood there literally frozen and would not move. I had to wade in and soak myself and freeze my toes off to lift him up.

Now of course he hates water and doesn't go swimming in the puppy pool at the puppy theme park when I take him there. And he hates baths:

Didn't ruin my day though. ;-)

Don't worry. She got her own back.

I bashed my knee dropping to the floor to grab her and a soggy glove & arm.

I also had to give her a shower when we got home because of the 'canal stink'.

Pesky critters ;^)

Starter motor crapped out on me. Had to get a tow home. Then had to arrange a tow to the garage this morning. When the AA man turned up this morning the car started no problem. . . . Typical! So I drove it down there myself. . Oh well, have to get a new starter motor as i can't trust the one I have any more. . .

Here in Portugal 2 bottles it´s enough to put a guy in floor :)

Thin clients rule. But when we deploy for clients we don't block sites - just filter for virii. Employees tend to be more productive if they ca be happy and do some personal stuff as well as opposed to leaving asap to go elsewhere to do it...

that my daughter had an accident.....

Posted 2 years ago
To find out, that the first serious night frost had caused the whole drinking water system in the horse-stable to collapse. I simply had forgotten to switch on the water-heating system! :-(
It costs 4 hours of work for me, my employee and an electrician, that thawed the waterpipe circulation system with 150 Ampere 50 Volt electrical power. We had to exchange 14 frost-damaged water-valves in the drinking-cups and I expect a considerable bill from the electrician! :-(
Now the heated water circulates nicely again. The frost has disappeared and I might not forget to switch on the water-heating system next winter - I hope at least! :-)

I can't decide what ruined my day, if it is almost only have gotten negative critique on one of my photos at 1x or that my tripod broke during a photo walk outside. The negative critique made me take the decision to not try again, and my money situation is currently not allowing a new tripod. So, I am a bit frustrated and whiny. :(

Monique, how is your daughter? Reading that put my whining into another light...

Please don't regard my comments and other's as being intentionally negative though, I believe we were only expressing our honest opinions of your image. No, John, you do not have to feel responsible! I liked your honest respond... but yesterday came a bunch more and sometimes it is not so much fun just to get the negative side. I never will give up photography and I will certainly try again at that location if I get way, way up north again. I will just not try it on 1x. There are another site for me. That was not today, but it has ruined my month.

My dogs (a Husky and a Lab) were chasing each other all around the house, and I heard something falling down.
It was my tripod ... With my brand new 50D on it.
The glass (60mm macro) is dead, but the body didn't get a single scratch.

Still, I almost had a heart attack that day.

Sven that really sucks. Thomas maybe you can get one of those small electrical heaters, they really do a big difference, my father lives in the countryside and it's sometimes 14°C in the house when it's not been heated up recently. Slippers and thick blankets help too. Still not fun.

Personally, a one hour interview with Sweden's two and only intellectual property prosecutors recorded on my iPhone now says it's 0 seconds long, and this was the cornerstone of the essay which is the final for the whole semester and it's less than a week left until it has to be finished. =P

On a positive note, my crashed external harddrive with all my photos ever on was resurrected by a very skilled data recovery guy. It cost me $1000 though. Hmm, maybe not so positive after all. From now on I will always have backups on at least 3 harddrives and I would recommend everyone else to do the same!

In the U.S. with my insurance, yes it would cover such an event. Automobile insurance would that is. There may be some limit and it may not be enough but it would cover. I have auto ins with a company called Allstate.

When I bought a new Nikon D300 and lenses, it toked an insurance who covers even when I fall with the camera.
I think, I and you could have a problem with assurance, if you material was visual from outside the car and not the trunk.

Very sorry to hear this news ..yikes. The trunk part is important at least with my regular car insurance. Clyde's company is better than mine..I have Geico. If you remember now - you HAD IT IN THE TRUNK...you just forgot. :))

You can buy a rider in the States on your home insurance policy..for very little money...very stupidly I have not done this..the cost for about 10 to 20 thousand of equipment..was almost nothing in a year! :) So maybe for the future you can look into it? I think once you are burned it becomes more of a priority - insurance that is.

Again, I hope you will be reimbursed for at least some of your loss.

The weather in Stockholm have ruined my day. -18 degrees. That is too cold for an old man.

Posted 2 years ago
It started early in the morning. Important project meeting, I'm the lead, so I arranged coffee, beamer etc in the meeting room. Five minutes before time my boss says, we need another meeting room on the floor below. Cool, I get everything and bring it to the other room.
Still time for a cigarette. I barely had it lit when the partners arrived. Had to threw it right away. Tantalizing pain.
We have four elevators, three big and a very small. We were seven people. Which elevator arrives? The tiny one.
OK, meeting goes its way, at noon I had to leave because I had to go to court. A mobile phone company demands 900 euros in unpaid bills. Too bad I only used pre-paid cards. No big deal, you can't scare a prostitute with sex and a lawyer with a court. I arrive in time, what do I see? 150 defendants round up in a small room - six of them were Europeans, the rest Belgians of various origins. After one and a half hour, the court was in session and the judge read out loud the names of each defendants. Poor judge had huge problems with spelling names names like Ngambo Mumba Sekusetokelele, and since 90 % of the names was like this, soon the whole audience (lawyers, defendants, assistants alltogether) were loughing out loud. Some ladies brought their babies who cried like hell and we agreed with a Moroccan guy that this whole mess is a multicultural festival Belgacom-style.
In the end, I had to wait three hours to be the 137. to be heard by the judge. I told her my version of the story, she promptly set another date for my case. It took about ninety seconds. Three hours waiting for this ninety (90) seconds. Cool.
OK, I called a taxi, waited half an hour, it didn't arrive. (This being in Brussels, it was heavily raining of course.) Called the dispatcher again, she said she didn't take any taxi order from my number. Since I can't curse in French very good, I just quit the line. Still better than last time when I called a taxi: at that time, when the dispatcher heard my not Belgian-sounding name, she promptly refused to take my order. I called her back to argue, what happens? She just smashes down the phone on me. Welcome to the capital of Europe!
I was hungry and wanted to have a burger. I go to Quick, the Belgian version of McDonalds, wait my long queue and when I wanted to order at last, the assistant says: sorry sir, this counter has just been closed.
OK, I made it back to the office, an email waits from the Sony Photo Awards. Heartbeat rate at 200: am I on the winners' shortlist? Of course not, but I could still buy discount tickets to their big event in Cannes. Put Sony Awards into the spam folder at lightning speed.
I arrive home. Wife says hello, food is in the fridge, and off she goes to her language class. Have to babysit until late night. OK, let's watch a 24 DVD. What do I see? Sweet little baby girl took out every book, CD, DVD and tape from the shelves. As if a bomb had went off in the bedroom and Jack Bauer had no time to defuse it. Now the little terrorist is sleeping and I seriously consider to jump out from the balcony.

"Funny" day indeed... and I think most of what you described happened to me once, though maybe not the same day (and BTW I did work in Brussels too). Especially your court story. It happened to me almost exactly the same about 10 years ago when I had a case with an employee. We had to wait hours for a previous case involving lots of people and different union reps, it was a mess and finally it took the judge 61 seconds to notify us that our case was delayed to another day...

Some fifty meter from me ,some one throw a grenade at a government police car,the car exploded ,and the whole army in the street start to shoot ,I have heard some thousand bullet shot,I took a shelter inside a shop of fresh vegetables about half an hour, until I saw some pedestrian come close the shop ,I just mix with them and fled the scene,it took me an other one hour to pass the check point.
arrived at home,do some little gardening and forgot everything about the accident, it is the eighth consecutive year of this series.

Al, I wish you all the best and I hope we could all tend our gardens (I don't have one but there is a little one at my parents home). I feel for you and I had similar days not far from that. Some years ago I woke up to the sound of rockets falling around my home in Haifa. We had to leave the house for some weeks and ask a neighbor to tend for the cats. We here in Israel have our own series and it seems it will never end.

I know the rejection at 1x can sometimes add to the misery of life, but Al, we both know this isn't real life and there are far more important things happening around us. Take care and watch yourself. I wish you (and me) a better future.

Found my external hard drive was completely filled up with back up files going back to May last year! Over 3 million files & I cannot find a way to delete all these files because each time I go to empty trash on my iMac it tells me ( and this after a day of the selected files being positioned ready to be trashed) that I cannot because there are locked items in there even using the Terminal application sudo rm -rf routine has failed to magic this stuff away. God knows I will never understand these infernal machines curse them once twice & three times. Sorry I cannot match Balazs for laughs or Al & Yakov for seriously real issues but please imagine size & comparison doesn't matter when you have a problem (when at Ford we used to have to call problems concerns) Anyway I off to have an early beer!

In Sweden it would be illegal. Retailers are allowed to attempt repair 3 times and then the customer can either request a replacement or full refund. Most companies have better polices than what the law requires and would replace if first repair fails.

Stupid too, by the way - cost of replacing is really, really much lower than all the transport, repair, hours, administration, etc...
Good luck with it...

Sadly it is kind of legal, here in germany law says the same but only in case it is the same fault ....not for different faults, there is no rule.
But Sony should be ashamed of themselves and offer an exchange device.....and I'm sure most vendors do.

The negative highlight was that the guy had the arrogance to say If I'm not happy I should try to give it back to the shop I bought it....
I'm crazy that a company like Sony acts so bad, sure I will try for giving back to Amazon but I don't think the'll agree for full refund,
and sadly I can effort it otherwise I'd kick this shit away and buy a different vendor.

Only thing I can do is to avoid that any friends or people I know buy ever a Sony again.....

Stupid too, by the way - cost of replacing is really, really much lower than all the transport, repair, hours, administration, etc...
Good luck with it...

Exactly what I think!
And it's extreme with Sony, it's picked up with expresss shipping here in germany and travels to UK everytime!

Well, not that anyone has heard this before but being rejected once again ruined my day. I don't particularly mind being rejected, I'd just much prefer my work to be rejected by the community in screening. My rejection count is so embarrassing I dare not even mention it here but more depressing is that it's working out that only 10% of what I upload even gets into screening. I have a pretty large collection of photographs (in the thousands) but anything I cherry pick isn't getting "through". I don't think it helps that my rejection rate is so appalling and I'm beginning to worry that if I do upload something that does live up to 1X expectations it won't be seriously considered because of my previous work. I'm going to take a step back from submitting here, perhaps in a few months I'll have something worthy. On the positive side, after disabling the emails, my inbox is no longer filled with the dreaded message I was getting all too used to.

Don't consider this a rant against 1X, it's just me venting about the lack of quality or interest in my work.

well yet another of my photos (actually this was a 'painting') was rejected yesterday (or the day before yesterday, can't remember) also yesterday one of my colleagues at work behaved in a way I would describe 'unacceptable' (due to a private reason)... so I am fine today... I feel that the future might be 'brighter', in general... recently I upgraded RAM in our Siemens Amilo Pro laptop (can run Photoshop on it now :) ), looks very solidly built (though the 'spec' is nowhere near the state of the art)...

Don't think you are the only one in that! It is absolutely no different with me, only 5 published and TONS of rejections! (really, really, really)
The point is to try to "do" something with each rejection:

1 - wonder after the rejection if you still feel 100% certain you should have uploaded it or that maybe indeed it was too optimistic even to try?
2 - if answer above postive: submit for critique to see if people can provide you with new insights about the shot and points of improvement
3 - if answer above positive: verify if the possible improvements are post processing (or would require the shot to be taken again)
4 - if answer above positive: do the new post processing and reconsider the upload again
5 - LOOP AGAIN

And if anywhere in this algorithm, the answer is NOT positive, then that doesn't mean the experience wasn't useful or learning something new along the way. Because:

Ad 1) you've reached new insights about what is submit-for-screening material and what is not (you get picky'er yourself)
Ad 2) you feel a tiny bit more confident about the shot in the first place which kind of makes up for the Rejection ;-)
Ad 3) you know what to look out for if you are shooting it again or are shooting in a similar situation
Ad 4) you have improved your image but still (after the feedback) you don't upload again because you've reached new insights about it again

This is no recipe to prevent disappointment (my last rejection from yesterday was VERY disappointing for me and as soon as I have time I'll jump into Critique again to try the above procedure) - but it's something that kind of works for me along the way...

Oh well... 2 rejections without any word why... yep... that is frustrating and that's worst that happened to me today... that doesn't mean my day is ruined, though lol

Down with Sony! A friend of mine had a problem with the display. He brought it to Sony only one day after the warranty expiration. They didn't accept it. He paid over 300 euro and nothing happened!

I have a Lenovo (IBM) T61- meanwhile a little old - for over two years, crashed several times, covered three times with coffee, Latte macchiato and cappuccino, swam twice in water, almost never turned off and it still works like a wild bull. Check out youtube for lenevo and watch the tests. At the beginning I thought they are fake, but they are true ...

Robin, I took a science test the other day and had absolutely no idea what any of the answers were. So rather then look hopeless, I decided to be entertaining. I wanted my science teacher to have a good time reading my test.
It's helpful to see 1x like that. :)

There was a funny hoax about a student answer to a physic exam which was about Hell being exothermic or endothermic. Did you ever read about it ? (the hoax was wide spread and "localized" in France but was possibly from US origin)

dieu".

Always a pleasure to read...

Thanks a lot for the translation (I told to myself I should have learned French), I find this essay very interesting, very interesting indeed...

If one would wish to be pedantic one could argue that the student should have assumed in his proof that there may have existed a third case (though statistically very unlikely) that Hell is neither exothermic nor endothermic, or that Hell is expanding at the exact rate at which souls enter Hell, but as he has proven that Hell is exothermic, this remark is only of 'academic' interest (though it may indicate that the question is not posed in the most general way).

I wonder during which year student wrote the essay, as, if I were the Professor, this could have affected his mark... ;) ...just joking I would have given him a+ for this essay regardless when it was written... :)

Well, I read that my critics had been rejected, not only my photos ! I suppose my english is to bad, I just cant write it good enough.
So now I cant upload any more photos. To me it seems like this site is for the " well spoken" people, or should it be the "elite"

I really must consider what´s important, try to publish photos or to write critic.

Actually, it started the day before yesterday...

The server doesn't work at work... ah, the power supply (again!!!).

Plug the thing out, no network... aaaaaaaah... a few hours later, after testing every possible connection, cable... ah, it's the router! A server and a power supply on the same day???

Next day, setting up a new network (without one of the routers) for minimal service, and of I go to buy a new router etc... what do you think, puncture!!! Super! Can't unscrew the MF because the tool is totally rusted... one hour later I manage to change the tire...

Today, with the help of a new power supply, router etc... It seems that the hard drive is corrupted, had to copy folder by folder, and find out what's missing and try to recover from backups (I hope...we'll see tomorrow).

Anyway, what made my day (what makes everyday actually) is when I pick up my daughter at daycare, and she's jumping from happiness ;-)

Now, I can't upload anything to 1X... but that will not ruin my day...

School.
Mi profesora de español me dice que no puedo hacer su classe para los dos años que vienen porque escribi un examen de mal calidad. Jetzt muss ich immer noch Deutsch nehmen bis Juli 2012.
And I'm preparing to be rejected from taking art next year because I can't draw and chemistry because I can't count. Grrrrr....

Very sorry to hear that Monique.

Do you suspect there could have been foul play or it's just a terrible accident?

According to the BBC (which I take with a pinch of salt) he was opposed rapid free-market reforms and favoured retaining social welfare programmes.

Best wishes.

Watching a programme last night about James Lovelock, the guy who put forward the Gaia hypothesis. A fascintaing and very clever man, but he has such a bleak view of what will happen to the Earth in the next ten to one hundred years, and he has a habit of being right. . . Thoroughly depressing.
I need to read some good counter arguments I think. There must be some people who have a more positive take on what we can actually do to prevent the awful scenario he is picturing. . .
Jon

ps, if anyone is interested, I did wonder about the place of man in his Gaia idea. I mean, if he is positing that the Earth is a self regulating system, then all life, including us, is a part of that. So what we are doing, (pollution etc) should presumably be considered as part of that system. (maybe mankind's self destruction is the best thing for the planet?) Unless he is saying that there was point at which mankind 'fell' in a biblical sense, and kind of opted out of the system. If so, when, why, how and who says so, and doesn't that mess up the theory?

Alternatively: Please reinstate that thread. It was meant as constructive measure, and many members mentioned that it is good to hear others speak frankly and from the heart. Should this free talking somehow be a threat, then frankly I shall have to reconsider my enthusiasm to support you gallery as from tomorrow. And I really mean it. Surely that will come as no loss to you, but it will be a great loss for me.
I have been to boot camp, but I never envisaged that I shall be back there when I pursue a creative outlet.

No you are not, and this message (which I received not now but a while ago) should explain why:

"As the "big founders" sayd before, 1X is not a comunity site, but a company that give services to pay members, with internal RULES, and i agree with that RULES, AND i don´t be all the time reading idiot things about screening, screeners, policy, philosofic anarchysts, etc etc etc ."
