What made your day today?
Posted 2 years ago
My wife and I went this afternoon to a larger church in the neighborhood to hear 4 amateur Chorus' join forces with an amateur symphony orchestra, a professionel conductor and 2 professionel soloist singers - to perform one of the most beautiful requiems I know of: Ein deutches Requiem by Johannes Brahms (especially the 2. and 5. movement is fantastic IMO)
Think about it - 270 volunteers join forces to give you and other local people a unique artistic experience - that really made our day!

Crossing a bridge into Regents Park with a postcard scene to the left...trees either side of a Thames side canal, pedestrians on the cement walkways either side of the canal, and a narrow boat house slowly purring away into the distance, just to be followed by another (which would have given me the time to set up for a picture). And the sun was just right. But - no camera with me - only the Border Collie and her frisbee.
I see adverts about compacts with DSLRl sensors thesedays. I need one of those, so shall keep a look-out for the reviews. After playing with an older Lumix recently, I am even more determined.

Gorgeous weather in NYC today.. went to a local "asphalt" park on 6th and Houston. The street hockey guys were playing, as they do every Sunday, and my ex and my son threw the football.. there were a group of guys playing basketball.. and a bunch of families playing catch. My dog was tireless in his pursuit of a tennis ball... and I shot loads of pics. Very happy day. Nice thread!

We have lovely neighbours, that really supports me in taking care of my sick wife. But that they nearly take their small cottage house (with too narrow doors for a rollchair) to pieces, to make it possible for my wife to visit them and celebrate birthsday with them, that made my day today! :-)

And the sun is shining and it's time to go feed the horses, the cows, the sheeps and the cats.....! :-)

Started the day early, acting as a 'baker-robot' for my disabled wife. She makes the most lovely pastry, but needs help with the practical implementation!
So from her wheel-chair she instructs me what to do - step by step, she has the recepie in her head - and we end up serving warm and nice smelling pastry for our-morning guests.
It's nice to be a robot sometimes! :-)
Have a nice day, all of you!

That's really, really cool, Lars. It is so good to hear that you two are making good food together like this, even in these very hard times for your family. I was going to say that it was a pretty grey and miserable day all that long here, in many ways, not just the weather, but then I could smell your delicious pastry, and things just didn't seem so bad anymore. Sounds mushy, I know, but it worked that way.

Take care :)

A couple days ago, on the 27th of Nov...

In the tepid weather of California, I went sea kayaking near lovely Monterey. There was a storm coming in so going one way was easy, coming back took more than twice as much effort and time. A sea otter grabbed my kayak rudder while I was busy keeping my camera out of the spray, even tried to clime on board. No good for photography if wanted to keep your camera dry (and getting blown askew), nevertheless a fabulous day. Somehow, I enjoy the adventures that challenging elements provide.

This was for my birthday :)

Neither do I. The blogger who set up the competition did it correctly, with displaying the name and link, but some of the others less so... Anyway, a little email boforehand would have made me happy. Some of the poems do, however. It's reassuring to know that among all the crap I make there are some which others find inspiring.

Hi Balazs - I am grinning from ear to ear. Some of those variants are really very good. Not so sure about 26, though, as I think that that strong thigh is a touch intimidating ( Jumbo Kick-Starter, we say back South). I prefer the 70's (60's?) look of 1, although I respect the interpretation that 33 offers. However, 22 still mystifies me. Do I hear Pablo?

My Wife just got accepted to fashion school in Sydney!!

After a 6 month ordeal and a very large and complicated admissions and review process for which we could not attend all interviews for and had to really make a portfolio stand out...and on it's own.....and prove that her English was acceptable (it is damn perfect and better than most Australians) and her residential status, etc, etc, etc.....

Well she got in! So it (mafan) all doesn't matter now!

MASSIVE SIGH OF RELIEF!

My sensitivities as an Australian male are not that, well, sensitive. I had no idea how to do a rejection counsel - should I need to - when she has built it up to being so much for herself.

Now I just gotta find all the thousands to pay for tuition. Will I ever own a Leica??? :-)

Phew - it is like the pressure cooker has just had it's valves bled...

I just got my Public Lending Right statement. ( a royalty, paid by the state for every time a book is borrowed from the library service in the UK, up to a certain limit ) I got the max payment! Only 250 other authors got that. . . It ain't a lot but it doesn't half help. . . ;-)
Not trying to boast but it did make my day ;-)

Happy New Year Andre,
I remember Dar-es-Salaam, stayed only there for one night before getting to Zanzibar. It was years ago and I took my best sunset pic ever here. Strange by the way to shoot sunset on an east coast. But there was a specific spot where the guesthouse was and from where you can see the bay from the East.

Posted 2 years ago
Thanks Jacques. Yep - I think that I know where you are referring to .
That will be directly opposite the yacht club on the other side of the northern bay.
If you have that image in digital format, please send me a copy some time.

Could be. There was some sort of narrow land from which you could see the main city separated by a bay, but I don't remember quite well. We were driven here directly from the bus central station (got the address on lonely planet). It was a really really nice place. I did the shot analog with a F3 camera, it was back 1998 I think. But most of my old pics are still on boxes since we moved here in the US. I found it a nice pic but could be that I'll be very disappointed if I can hold my hand on it right now...:)

Posted 2 years ago

You are correct Jacques - the north bay is separated from the main city and port area by a peninsula - that is the narrow land that you are referring to.
Incidentally - this north bay is probably one of the best hobie sailing spots in the world given the width of the bay and the constant trade winds, and the shelter that two islands provide.
Oh well - off to (hopefully) a cooler SA tomorrow, and soon back to the real world and the day job:(

My Dad came home after a month in hospital following bowel surgery for cancer.

He's 81 and he hadn't eaten for 3 weeks before the op and struggled to eat after for a few weeks.

His wound also got badly infected, but is now healing well.

Great to see him back in his chair with a smile on his face.

But then anything would be better than the the pink bath with goldy/brassy taps; and grey tiles with oblique pinkish stripes and pictures of hot air balloons on that we inherited when we bought the house five years ago ;-)

Wow Balazs - this is quite severe documentary work from you. Gosh - you have been around the block! Thank you for the link - very disturbing, nevertheless factual and in a very perverse way - good to see. However, documentary evidence like this can only be good if we can learn from them - a trait that humankind seem to be in short supply of.

after some consideration I am afraid that I shell conclude that my personal opinion is that "The Venus Project" is very utopian idea which not only is very unlikely to be implementable but also if it should be implemented it would most likely 'degenerate' into something worse than capitalism, and that capitalism and the Darwinian survival of the fittest is possibly the best thing humans can hope to be implemented in a 'real' society...

what made MY day today... is that I am finally mastering my SB800 flash, and I am using them with my Nikon D80 to produce some really interesting results by going TOTALLY manual.
That is to say, manual settings on the camera, manual settings on the flash.
What I am playing with is the Auto FP function in that I am using a really fast shutter speed and wide open aperture... so that my background is basically ... black!
I probably should have posted this on flash photography but I noticed nobody really goes there.

Anyway... thats what made my day!

A perfect day for me today!
It started with my first publication on 1x which was such a wonderful surprise first thing this morning :-) :-) :-) I haven't stopped smiling all day!

Then i had the day off work and it was a perfect sunny day so i took my camera for a walk along the river and got my first decent photographs of a Kingfisher (definately no match for the ones in 1x nature but i'm pleased with them anyway)

And then, just as i thought the Kingfisher was about to leave, in swooped a Sparrow Hawk which chased the Kingfisher low and very fast over the river. The Kingfisher got away by diving underwater and appearing again under an overhang of the river bank, clever little thing!! phew, and then i started breathing again.,talk about being within an inch of his life :-)
Did i get a shot of any of this?.....Nope, i was too enthralled just watching the chase and it all happened so fast anyway that i doubt very much that i could have even got them in frame let alone in focus. But for me, the experience was more than enough reward and i doubt i will ever see such a thing again. :-)

So......just a totaly perfect day all round :-)

Vic.

- We got another highland cattle calf today, and I managed to mark him, despite fierce opposition from the mother and her big horns!
- My wife went shopping with me in her wheel-chair, and seemed to enjoy it!
- The sun was shining the whole day!
- The resting box for the wild docks was fixed in our small 'lake' in the back-garden. Yes, we are ready for reproduction and spring! :-)

Thank God, it's finally spring! :-)

Calumet Photographic have finally decided to send me a new Canon 7D, 2 weeks after I returned my brand new purchase when it wouldn't accept memory cards.

A pin was bent in the card reader slot and comments were initially made that I must have put the card in wrong. Apparently there's one pin slightly longer than the others in the middle of the group, and rough treatment or a dodgy card can sometimes cause it to bend. In which case, it's the owners fault, not the sellers.

However, after sending it to Canon to get it checked out, it turned out the bent pin was not the long one, but one sitting further out towards the end of the group, so it was concluded it was highly unlikely I could have damaged it in that way.

After forking out nearly £1,500 UK pounds for a camera I hadn't managed to take a single photo with, and was possibly facing a further bill of a few hundred more to fix it, I've been getting rather stressed out about the whole thing.

However, the phone call today to tell me a replacement will be in the post tomorrow made my day :)

Well if you can't make it up on the 1st of May for the launch, then the last weekend in May is a good one to come up for. It's a bank holiday and around here it's the Spring Fling weekend where local artists open their doors for the weekend - see http://www.spring-fling.co.uk/ - lots to see.

And on the Sunday afternoon at the exhibition I'll be setting up the camera and laptop and showing the public how you can take a photo of them and manipulate the image - smoothing out wrinkles like the magazines, or turning their skin green and giving them pointy ears (always a favourite with the kids)

May's the best month to visit Scotland - the weather tends to be good and the midges haven't started biting yet :)

So what was your problem, Bob?

Hi K

A faulty D60 straight out of the box.
The insisted on sending it back to Nikon instead of replacing it and after3 weeks of waiting for Nikon to get parts that never arrived, I made such a big fuss that Nikon ok'd a new camera. There seems to be a lack of common sense in some of these organizations.

Glad it's getting sorted Kim. I had some similar fun with Calumet a while back. Don't think I'd bother with them again.
Getting the 20mm F/2.8 Nikon prime made my day today. Nice little lens.
B

Oooh! I want one of those but they ain't cheap! The Sigma 1.8 version is cheaper but has iffy reviews.

And happy birthday JP! Your wife didn't forget, which is a good sign.

My daughter is 16 on Thursday. That makes me feel old. . .

Hi Jon.
I got a mint and modern version from Ebay for £320.
I would have believed it was new. I've seen them go for as little as £280 for A1 condition.
It's lightweight and tiny too.

Yep, great lens!! Got mine in Mint Cond. for @$250 from a store. The guy I buy a lot from in there had just taken it in on trade and hadn't put it into computer inventory yet. Made me killer deal. I went home and found the cheapest on ebay was well up towards $400.

Well, it was two days ago actually - but I learned that my oldest Grandson, who is a performing artist (singer/actor), got into the Governor's School here in VA. This is a special school for the Arts. He is 15. I am proud because very very few people are accepted, and more importantly he was thrilled. This will bring wonderful future opportunities for him in terms of college choices. :) So yes, I am a proud Grandma now. :)))

It's one of my "forgotten tragedy" series:

It is 03:00 am, and I have just arrived at Eu. This is a small village close to the Normandy coast, and contrary to my previous visits here there is:
hot water, functioning central heating, the oven, fridge and dishwasher is connected and WORKS, all lights work, and most important - the bath runs hot water and has a plug!!
Still having to stumble over upturned wheeelbarrows, piles of construction material, and oodles of pieces of wood, but that annoyance becomes a pleasure given the functional utilities. So I am as happy as a kite.
Tomorrow when it is Wheetabix time I shall have the pleasure of seeing black & white (my fav colours) cows coming to graze around the house, and then when it is close-down time and I get the Weeber out for the barbeque the hares will come and parade their new offspring.
And somewhere in between the hours of the cows and the hares, the local population will move in with their Peugeots and our silence will occasionally be shattered when another Normandy pleasant will meet it's Maker.
Regards from this strange and envigorating and Uppitynose and real place that they call France.

This little abode functioned as the hunting lodge of the Chateau in the 2nd link.
I was too rushed today to get groceries, but thanks to Balazs I am enjoying a Palm from Belgium which he left me here a year go.
Bless his soul:)

Thank you Clyde. I realize you are one of the few people here that this would make some sense to having come from this area. The course work in Performing Arts that he will study there is taught by a professor from James Madison Univ, and the English courses are from faculty member from Blue Ridge Community College. So he will be taking his college classes, in those subjects, in his Junior Year in High School. Since he probably will go to James Madison for his BA, it is a jump start. Who knows maybe he will have you for a teacher!! :))

Andre, that sounds wonderful! We are going to the Normandy/Britanny area in July for a week. Your description of the area makes me wish it was sooner! Hares are such magical animals too ;-)
Oh well, off to see some bluebells today. A cliche but always enjoyable. Can I resist taking awful pictures of them?
The thing that has made my day so far is seeing a couple of swifts. Right on time. Summer is not far away when they are here.

Hey Jon. I will come out here more frequently now as the house is slowly becoming less hostile, so maybe we will do our promised visit...but in France:) That will be fun, and different.
Depends on where you will be. Have car - can drive.
As predicted - Weber Time right now, and across the fence there are dozens of those furry things playing around.
Francesca, who is 10 now, saw some cows pissing this morning, and was truly amazed about the volume of pee. She cannot stop talking
about it. Should I get worried:)
Bluebells...there are many around here, who how on earth do you take pictures of them:)

Seeing my 101st 1X publication from my hospital bed on heavy pain medications after surgery to replace both of my knees...and having that photo be my most recent work, 2 May, and that work on shot on b/w film with my view camera and personally developed in my makeshift darkroom.

Nice way to wake up.

Any apparent lucidity is an illusion. I'm doped up, pain free and have the functioning IQ of a loaf of bread.

Not really today, but a few days ago. I got a signed copy of "ETRAVE", a book from Plisson where I have a photo published. http://plisson.com
A masterpiece of a book about bow design. Anyone who are interested in maritime photos should have a look at it. Big size book, great print quality, and a lot of inspirational photography. A serious book that must be more than 5 kilos..

A diptych I'd created from the work of two friends which was featured in a gallery in Iran as part of an international art project and was sold five times for 250 dollars, the proceeds going to a charity which supports children with cancer. Though I know this shouldn't be my incentive, I feel like I've made a very small, yet meaningfull contribution to this strange planet.
