My photo gallery project
Posted 2 years ago
Just wanted to let you know about an ongoing photography project I run on one of my employers websites.

My day job is a bit hard to describe but it is basically managing the online aspects of the Community Newspaper Group here in Perth, Western Australia. We publish 22 local weekly newspapers and about 5 different websites.

The main site is called Inmycommunity which is a local news and community portal website.

It is a large website with many different types of content. One part that is my own personal project is the photo galleries located at http://www.inmycommunity.com.au/fun-stuff/galleries/.

I have been running these since the site began about 18 months ago.
What I do is add 3 new photographer galleries each week with the intention of building a really strong and interesting collection of contemporary online photography.
To date I have 188 photographers galleries on the site.

Just wanted to mention it as you may like to check them out.
There are galleries by famous and not so famous photographers, with a good sampling of each photographers work.
I add 3 new galleries each Monday so it is always growing.

Also I would be happy to hear about other photographers you know of that I could contact to add to the collection in the future.

Hi Lucian

You are definitely on my list of photographers to contact.
You may have noticed I put up galleries for Fernand Hick and Robert Hutinski recently.
These were the first two from 1X site but I will definitely be asking more from here over time.

I have about three weeks of galleries ready at the moment so will be doing another round of photographer requests soon.

What I have found really nice doing this project is how many of the people I ask are happy to let me add their work, even so-called famous photographers.
Some don't reply and very rarely I get a 'no', usually due to contract restrictions, but the big majority say yes.

Hi Mark,
I have been to your site, congratulation for your choice of photographers:-)

I suppose, my kind of surreal composed] images aren't welcome there, because it isn't one-shot photography anymore and maybe to much different. That's why I'm called the R.Magritte or Dali in the photography by many and they are already published in a lot of international photo-sites and magazines...
so, if not in the selection, I understand.

Best Regards,
Ben

Steve McCurry - Great photojournalist, he took the famous 'Afghan Girl' image. A true master of color photography.

Vincent Favre - Picturesque landscapes from the French alpine region.

Any other (not 1X) photographers you can suggest would be most appreciated.

Interesting that you just added Steve McCurry right now, I just visited a lecture by him in Utrecht yesterday, sponsored by Nikon at the "Zoom Experience" event. Very inspiring, with some amazing photographs of the famous Afghan girl in 1984 I think, and of course the story behind it...

You really should read your history. That is not at all accurate. The U.S. Civil War was predominately an economic war. Don't you know all wars are fought over money. There were many in the North that were opposed to abolition because it would increase the cost of goods and materials they were buying from the Southern states. Lincoln was not an outspoken abolitionist until he used it as a chief plank in his re-election bid. He needed money bad to continue the war and support was waning. Yes slavery was a central issue but the overriding issues were economic and state's rights. Especially in the time leading up to secession and the subsequent war.

I stand corrected Clyde, though I did just copy that text from another civil war site.
American history is not one of my interests.

Most folks in America would actually agree with your original statement. And, it's not totally wrong. It's just that it was more complicated that just slavery. And, yes, ALL wars are fought over money. If the slavery issue was not tied so closely to the broader economic issues there would have been no Emancipation Proclamation. The war still might have happened...who knows!

Whatever the reasons were it seems to me that we as a species do not need much of a reason to start slaughtering eachother.

Here are the 3 latest photographer galleries I have added for the week commencing December 7, 2009

Jen Davis - A portfolio of self-portraits by Jen examining both personal and universal issues like body image, isolation, relationships, sexuality and identity.

Wayne Levin - Wayne is primarily an underwater photographer but his images go deeper than most. He reveals a world that is mysterious and alien to us, yet is often as close as the nearest beach.

Ben Gest - This gallery shows samples of Ben's two main bodies of work. Individuals in seemingly mundane situations, deep in thought , often looking worried or tense. Family 'units' frozen in a moment of time inside their private domestic worlds.
