Lightroom export for web/1x
Posted 2 years ago

Are there any settings that I am missing for optimizing images for upload to 1X (or anywhere else for that matter)? I know CS3 had an "export to web" which was basically just a convert-to-SRGB JPEG export. Not really sure if it did anything else "special". In LR, are there any settings I should know about when I export photos to SRGB/JPEG @ 950 pixels? The image files are particularly small (usually less than 500Kb), even though I have JPEG quality set at max. Not sure if the resolution setting does anything when you have the pixel dimensions set. Just wondering if I can squeeze out any more quality from a 950 pixel picture. Honestly they always turn out disappointing at that size. I dont know how anything can stay sharp after that...

Lars,

I check off do not enlarge, 950 by 850 pixs, leaving the resolution at 300 and optimize for screen and it usually works out pretty well. The only thing I have found is that saving through LR, as opposed to CS4, causes the picture to be a bit darker than when I view it through LR.

@Kevin, do you save it in sRGB and have your browser enabling color management? That should solve the color difference problem. Otherwise, your settings are correct and will give the best possible quality for 1x.

@Lars: you can turn jpg compression down to 80 without any visible loss in quality. 500KB for a 950x700 image is pretty heavy, actually. And the depth will not make any difference, it is a setting only used in print.

I do like this:

Export jpg file from LR to PS
Adjust image size to 950 px
Duplicate image
Add highpass filter set to 0,3
Blend by using linear light
set opacity to 70%
Flatten image

I think this is the best way to sharpen for web. Hope I could help :) Of course you need PS for this..

Alex - I do save in sRGB but will double check the browser - only use Firefox

I'm sure you are only allowed 900 wide and 750 deep. That what it says on the upload page anyway. ( it was 850 deep a few months ago and suddenly changed )
