Sally Mann, one of the greatest contemporary artists in America today is having a new exhibit in NYC at the Gagosian Gallery from September 15th through October 31st, 2009.

If you are lucky enough to be in or live in NYC - and are not familiar with her work - I really cannot say enough about Sally! :)
More info can be found at these links below ..I hope they work okay..She writes about the work at the first one. Also, some of the photos are with the information.

As one of the articles describes she works from,
wet-plate collodion negatives, produced by coating a sheet of glass with ether-based collodion and submerging it in silver nitrate.

If anyone does go, can you later share your experience of her work with me?

Thanks much Phyllis

I visited an exhibition with her work in Stockholm Sweden a couple of years ago and I thought it was very much worth a visit.

I loved the essay. Very touching. I like her work too.
I loved her comment about how most good pictures 'come at the sitter's expense'. This is interesting in relation to the Street photo thread and the comparitively inconsiderate attitudes towards the 'sitter' put forward by a lot of street photogs. Food for thought. . .

Just to follow up, from September 26 on, the Fotomuseum in Den Haag, The Netherlands showcases the work of Sally Mann - earlier work from the "immediate family" series, and work from the more recent "what remains" and "faces" series.

very very very much recommended

Thank you very much for the reminder Koen. I did see a documentary about her on TV the other day. Very impressive and with a very interesting view on life and photography!

Hi, I went to see the exhibit two days ago at lunch. I was the only one there! It was fantastic... The combo of her negative developing, composition, exposure and of course artistry is just a beauty to behold. These pictures are all of her husband Larry over the last 6 years. He suffers from muscular dystrophy, which I didn't realize till later. These are mostly tightly cropped images of him, and parts of his body. Very, very inspiration show!

You can order the hard cover book of the images through Gagosian gallery for 75 US.

Also, Robert Frank "The Americans" is on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in NY... I'll be seeing that next!

Nice comment, JBA. The complicit victim is a most desirable subject, yes?

Pat..so happy you got to see the exhibit.

Also, I am so pleased that many of you love Sally's work. She is a one of a kind for sure. There is a very good film called "What Remains" which is a documentary of her and her life. The film focuses primarily on her work with corpses, but also it touches on many other parts of her life. I was able to rent it on line from Netflix. I enjoy listening to her speak about her life, because I think in just about everything she has to say - you 'hear' what you can then 'see' in her work. If I were a writer, (which I am not) I would want to write a book about her, showing how the photographer's approach to people, and the way they live their own lives, impacts all of their work.

I have a secret desire to meet Sally Mann, if only to have a coffee with her. She lives in the next town from me but, she is a very private person. Some day I may just get up the nerve to sit on the side of the road in front of her farm, and hope for a chance meeting. :))))

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about her.

Phyllis
