I think to "cut/crop parts of a body" you need a very sharp knife, or if neatness isn't necessary you can use a saw.
And, yes, in most cultures, especially in the more "western" ones, "cropping/cutting parts of body" is generally forbidden!

But, seriously now, I know very little about portrait photography. So I guess I'm just being a smart ass this morning...

Here are 2 shot in my "Great Faces" Album, they each take a different approach to the question you ask. Each is very pleasing to me. But if you reversed the choice and cropped the 1st one the way the 2nd one is cropped it would not work as well, imo. And vise versa.

This is quite nice too:

These 2 work great, but wouldn't work at all if the crop was accomplished by the edge of frame:

I love this, but just a little more room under the chin would have created less tension for me:

For me this doesn't work, either it's too tight or not tight enough:

But, this one which has similar cropping is great, because the tension works here:

And finally one little self promotion, do you like this one??

I guess from this you can tell that, for me, it's very much dependent on the subject and the mood of the shot. I really don't know much about shooting people, but I doubt that there are much in the way of hard and fast rules...

Hillbilly's bored at work, so you will have to just put up with me today!!

Rezkie, for "old school" and "classical" or "old fashioned" photographers like me, my teachers teach me :

-forbiden cut the knees
-forbiden cut the elbows
-and avoid cut in other articulations of body in most cases ...

but, maybe apear here lot´s of guys said i´m wrong .... :-)
