What is 'motif'
Posted 3 years ago
What is the rejection reason of 'motif' to be used for?

most of the time if you shoot a motif from a very common angle. you can take interesting photos of a common motif but you can also take common photos of interesting motif's.

In photography it commonly refers to the theme of the photo.

For example: Streetsweeper at work. That could be just too boing a motif unless it was, for example, interesting in composition.

So I would use 'Motif' to indicate a boring subject, which is a subtle different from 'impact' which might be an interesting subject. Does that sound right?

Don't worry Jf, I'm an English speaker and still can't work out the meaning of motif in this site's context. The Cambridge English dictionary has it as : 'a pattern or design'.

I'm coming to the conclusion though that it means the theme or subject of an image, whereas 'impact' implies the strength or power of the theme or subject..??

There is an existing forum topic (also called "What is 'motif'") in the "Philosophy of Photography" section that explains this. :-)

Motif has several definitions depending on context. It can mean a pattern or repeating element, but in the context of a work of art it is usually used to mean a dominant idea or central theme.

Lars/Kevin, can we combine these two threads on motif?

Can't combine but both are in Philosophy of Photography now

This site does an admirable job of improving our photography; should there be a focus on improving our reviewing? A help button by the rejection reasons that gives some simple guidance on the meaning of each reason would help newcomers for instance. I have made site suggestions around improving feedback on the review process as well.
