Ken on Composition
Posted 3 years ago
While not strictly a tutorial, I can wholeheartedly recommend reading Ken Rockwells blogpost about Composition, or as he describes it "The most important thing I've written in the past few years." I agree ;-)

Here's a quote:
What makes the photo stand out or make it beautiful? Is there a funny gesture? Does the cat have a $500 bill in its mouth? Are you showing me a unique point of view I haven't seen before? Is there a punchline (funny ending) someplace?

Ask yourself: what about the photo makes it worthwhile for anyone else to spend the time examining? If there isn't anything, then it's just another crappy snapshot. Digital will do this to people; that's why there's a delete button. Use it.

Good photos reward viewers. Crappy photos without rewards waste people's time.

Happy reading.

George.

i do always say that compo is the most important thing of a photo. a well composed photo can be unsharp, under or overexposed, grainy... but its still a great photo. this is why i find it important to study composition. no wonder a lot of great photographers are drawers or painters too and did study composition and geometry. like hcb said: geometry is the real joy of photography!

Surely true

Not always true, when lack of quality is too prominent
